Solve : LCD Monitor went blank - and interesting 'service'?

Answer»

First, thank you both Merlin and di65 for answering my post.  (I've gone to the 'linked' sites, and really do appreciate your help).

I've just returned from taking my F1702 LCD panel Certified Data monitor back to London Drugs (since it's their store brand) - where I've shopped for years and purchased 2 computers (both Certified Data and nary a problem), a scanner, printer and all-in-one etc (and this monitor was purchased there, as well)  and always been pleased with their normally wonderful staff.

But I was told in person  this evening what their representative had said on the phone earlier - that  "there may not be any parts available" to repair this particular LCD monitor - but I could pay them $50.00 'estimate fee' and they would phone me on Monday to LET me know if parts are even available.

I suggested that surely an 'estimate fee' would apply only when 'guestimating' the cost of repairs themselves - not to tell me if they even have parts?? And to make matters even more interesting, the representative then wondered why I would 'bother to have the monitor repaired anyway' - since they have come down from over $600 to about $350 over the past 2 years since it was purchased - and yup, he suggested I simply buy a new Certified Data.
(I wonder why he would think anyone in their right mind would make a repeat purchase of a brand where he maintains  'parts may or may not be available' should it need a repair? Eek!).

So London Drugs now has my magical monitor - and sadly, caught 'between a rock and a hard place', I paid the $50 'estimate fee' in order to learn if they even have parts for repairs.  Heavy sigh.

If they have parts - and if the repairs don't cost a fortune - I'll have it repaired.  But sadly, never again will I feel quite the same way about purchasing from London Drugs - and even sadder, can never again risk purchasing anything made by Certified Data.  Drat!

With kind regards,
Mara

If you're forced to get a new one and you have the space, a crt is still the way to go.Hi Fed,

Even THOUGH I work with mostly graphics and photo editing, do you still feel at CRT is better than an LCD monitor?

(Only wish they made thin CRT's - have such limited space here, too).

Kindest regards,
MaraAll the reading I've done says crts have better colour. Thanks for the advise, Fed ... an a CRT is so much cheaper, too!

A bit of info on London drug ...... They're are a very LARGE chain operation ........and most of their locations has a very large Audio / Video section .........They carry a varied selection of complete packages as well as barebones kits , components of all types as well as a good selection of software....in short , they can look after almost all of your requirements . Most of their locations have in store service techs. Unfortunately Mara .....had a problem with a monitor which only comes with a 1 year warantee ........
That monitor , LIKE most others was built in the orient somewhere ( as are the majority of other components )
If I'm looking for a part , or some memory or any other incidental computer related item .........the first place I check is London Drug.   I will continue to use them .......Sometimes things simply fail .......we have all had that experience...........I don't think if fair to cease to do business with or lose trust in a Company simply because a product was purchased there and failed a year after the warantee had run out .....

LOL.......Bloody *censored* I really went on a rant ........LOL
But I wanted to set the record straight .

DonHi Don,

It's okay to 'rant' - grin - and actually you are quite right, normally London Drugs has great service.

I think the hardest part of this whole thing was the odd attitude of the gentlemann in the computer section ... can sadly understand if somethings not fixable, but how odd that he seemed to think it was 'funny' (literally ha ha) that parts 'may or may not be available' for their own product - and then wondering why I wouldn't want to buy another monitor also made by Certified Data, knowing that if this too goes poof, parts may or may not be available to fix it either.

Won't buy another Certified Data product - only because I can't afford to take the risk financially ... but other than this one 'odd' person in their computer department, I agree totally - London Drugs is a great store.

Kindest regards,
Mara
