Answer» Is it acceptable to refer people to another forum if the other forum would help them more? I have linked people to other forums when I wasn't sure how to ANSWER them and am unsure if it is following the RULES... I think it should be okay, but thought I ought to make sure before I get kicked out for decreasing traffic to CH. If the forum has a post that helps answer their question it would be no different than referring the user to a web page that has an answer.
Of course that being said, simply replying to users directing them to another forum and not a direct post with an answer is not allowed because that would not be answering the users question directly. That makes sense. But wouldn't it be better to help them find a better PLACE to find their answer than just let them sit there with nothing to go on? I'm mostly referring to the web design forum. It seems like I'm the know-it-all of web design on the forum since not very many others are answering questions there. That being said, sometimes I'm not sure if I would be able to answer some of the questions but I do know that the guys on another forum could. I don't like to leave the op hanging like that if I know where to find better help. In a WAY, linking them to a forum and telling them to ask a question there is like linking them to yahoo and telling them to ask there... I'd assume that most people who do not find the answer to their question on the forum would immediately look ELSEWHERE including on another forum. If you don't know the answer to the question, I'd just leave the post alone and see if any other users have an answer to the question.
If users of the forum were to start just re-directing people who were asking questions to alternate sources if they did not know the answer every post would be: I don't know go to Google.com to find the answer.
I'll try to participate more in the web design section to see if I can help out some more.
