Solve : Macrium Image Restore on WinXP New Internal Hard Drive?

Answer»

Thought I should start a new thread for the benefit of others facing the same issue. I have back-up images of C and D on an external hard drive and want to transfer them to a new hard drive. I think I have already made one mistake because the Macrium Rescue CD is Linux - I think I made the wrong one as my OS is WinXP. I tried booting my computer with the old internal hard drive and Macrium Rescue CD to see what will happen. That is when I realized I have Linux. Then I went to the first step which asked me to select the location of the image I wanted to load and it did NOT show my external hard drive.

Do I need to make another Macrium Rescue CD? Why isn't my external hard drive showing? The Linux CD is the right one.  Don't know why the external drive is not showing up.I assume the external drive is CONNECTED via usb? See if there is a bios setting to enable USB at boot (or similar wording).Yes, connected by USB. I can't boot my computer to check the bios. Right now I am reinstalling the OS from the recovery discs that came with the computer. Don't know if this will be successful because I do not know specifically what is wrong with my internal HD. Thanks for your help!If SMART is reporting a problem with the hard drive, this may be the reason the boot CD doesn't see the USB drive.  A bad hard drive can hang the POST.

Computer does not boot to get to BIOS, so don't know what you mean.  If it won't POST (get to BIOS), it won't do much of anything.Sorry, I often use the wrong computer terms. I do get a screen with some choices at the bottom such as esc for menu, F10 for recovery and it gives me a button for set-up which may allow me to get to bios.  I had to click on esc to get a menu that allowed me to boot the CD ROM drive first. Ok, I completed formatting old hard drive and can now post and boot-up. Please tell me how to change bios setting so external hard drive shows when I boot with Macrium Rescue CD. Thanks.

Wow, am I in a time warp? Looking at my system as it existed in 2006 is overwhelming. I have given-up trying to update software. At the end of the format/ recovery, the diagnostics SAID 15 pr or file segments were unreadable. Can't wait for my new hard drive. Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 20, 2012, 04:26:42 PM

Macrium will not give me much help until I buy the paid program but they did tell me to use the Win PE Rescue CD as it would be much more compatible than Linux. There is no support for the Free version of Macrium...i frankly don't see a need to purchase it.
If you boot from the CD the procedure is simple...it asks for the image file + point it to the External HDD...
Then it asks for a destination - point it to the new HDD and let it do it's thing.
When it is finished power down and disconnnect the external for now...set the internal HDD as 1st boot device and re-boot. Quote from: patio on October 21, 2012, 09:26:47 AM

Thanks Patio. The problem is my USB connected external hard drive is not showing as a location for the image when I use the Linux Rescue CD so I can't click on it. Maybe this has something to do with my faulty HD. I'll come back after I get my HD installed. The external should still show...
Is it powered Up ?
Is it connected to a front USB port ? ? ...if so move it to a rear port...Yes, power on light shining bright. It is connected to a back 2.0 but I will move it to front.YIPPEE!  I went into the Phoenix-AwardBIOS CMOS Setup Utility and changed from plug & play to BIOS configures external devices. That allowed my external drive to appear in the Rescue CD. In the HDD Group Boot Priority screen, my internal drive is #1 and external drive is #2. Does it make any difference which drive has boot priority?

I always keep 3 back-up images and label them New, Newer and Newest. For some reason, only New and Newer are there and Newer goes back to Feb 2012. Newest is just a few weeks old and I sure wish I could restore it.  Go figure.

Getting closer........Where is the image labelled Newest ? ?
If you saved it to the external it should be there.
The Internal HDD should have 1st boot priority...actually i keep mine as CD/DVD 1st then internal HDD 2nd. Quote from: patio on October 21, 2012, 11:45:16 AM

I dunno Patio. In fact, now that I think about it, I had 5 or 6 text documents also backed-up on the ex HD and they didn't show either. Doesn't make any sense that some files/folders show and some don't.
Any suggestions?
