Solve : Macrium Image Restore on WinXP New Internal Hard Drive? |
|
Answer» Thought I should start a new thread for the benefit of others facing the same issue. I have back-up images of C and D on an external hard drive and want to transfer them to a new hard drive. I think I have already made one mistake because the Macrium Rescue CD is Linux - I think I made the wrong one as my OS is WinXP. I tried booting my computer with the old internal hard drive and Macrium Rescue CD to see what will happen. That is when I realized I have Linux. Then I went to the first step which asked me to select the location of the image I wanted to load and it did NOT show my external hard drive. The Linux CD is the right one. Don't know why the external drive is not showing up. Macrium will not give me much help until I buy the paid program but they did tell me to use the Win PE Rescue CD as it would be much more compatible than Linux. There is no support for the Free version of Macrium...i frankly don't see a need to purchase it. If you boot from the CD the procedure is simple...it asks for the image file + point it to the External HDD... Then it asks for a destination - point it to the new HDD and let it do it's thing. When it is finished power down and disconnnect the external for now...set the internal HDD as 1st boot device and re-boot. The problem is my USB connected external hard drive is not showing as a location for the image when I use the Linux Rescue CD so I can't click on it. Maybe this has something to do with my faulty HD. I'll come back after I get my HD installed. The external should still show... Is it powered Up ? Is it connected to a front USB port ? ? ...if so move it to a rear port...Yes, power on light shining bright. It is connected to a back 2.0 but I will move it to front.YIPPEE! I went into the Phoenix-AwardBIOS CMOS Setup Utility and changed from plug & play to BIOS configures external devices. That allowed my external drive to appear in the Rescue CD. In the HDD Group Boot Priority screen, my internal drive is #1 and external drive is #2. Does it make any difference which drive has boot priority? I always keep 3 back-up images and label them New, Newer and Newest. For some reason, only New and Newer are there and Newer goes back to Feb 2012. Newest is just a few weeks old and I sure wish I could restore it. Go figure. Getting closer........Where is the image labelled Newest ? ? If you saved it to the external it should be there. The Internal HDD should have 1st boot priority...actually i keep mine as CD/DVD 1st then internal HDD 2nd. Quote from: patio on October 21, 2012, 11:45:16 AM Where is the image labelled Newest ? ? I dunno Patio. In fact, now that I think about it, I had 5 or 6 text documents also backed-up on the ex HD and they didn't show either. Doesn't make any sense that some files/folders show and some don't. Any suggestions? |
