Solve : MAJOR slowdown?

Answer»

Hi! First I would like to say hi to everybody. I'm new here!

I'm having problems with my computer. It's a P4, 3Ghz, 1Gig of Ram, and 120 Gig HD.

It started running slow a while back, then recently it got REALLY slow. So I backed up everything and reformatted, thinking this would solve my problems. It didn't, they got worse. So now I'm clueless, what could be going wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!Which operating system are you using?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Windows XPI COULD be wrong, but Windows XP "eats up" a lot of that HARD disk space of yours.. Everything else on your computer looks like it should be fast!

[glb]Flame[/glb]Flame, buddy OLE pal, I think the post says the HD is 120GB O crap! You're right!    Sorry everyone! It's about 8:00 here in Florida, so I'm a LITTLE out there right now... lol   Sorry again!
[glb]Flame[/glb]Being that I was too tired in my last post, lets troubleshoot! (I'm awake now, don't worry!)    Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Flame, Wake up again, he said he has just formatted his disk and it is just as bad!

Theorectically a format and re-install should have resovled your problem..mmm this seems strange especially with a clean install, tell me what other programs have you installed to it and after you are in windows how much memory is left and ONE more thing what is the cpu usage, you can check all this is task manager, look at the performance and process tab.

KimUnless the user keeps on doing the same thing to get the virus again... Ex. Downloading a program that you think is good and is supposed to help, but is actually a virus... Not easy to explain or understand, but I've seen it happen...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Well, when I first started the computer up after the reformat, it was really slow. I tried installing my drivers that came with the computer and it was installing rediculously slow. After I got through that and got the Internet up and working, I started downloading the Windows updates. Then the computer started GETTING faster and more reliable.

It's not too bad now, I'm able to install my programs easily and there not be much slowdown, but it could be faster.

When I'm in Windows, there's about 486168 K of memory available. And my CPU usage is only about 8%Well.... You seem to be doing better... Lets try to "fill-up" that room for improvement... Tell me... Do you have a registry cleanup program?
