Solve : make a desktop mimic a laptop?

Answer»

i have a desktop Windows XP using Roadrunner cable w/ WIFI. I have my own router so i don't use the cable company's router (thus saving money). Just got a 2nt desktop Windows XP. Is there a way to mimic this 2nd desktop as a laptop? would an antenna help do that? bottom line here is that our cable company charges too much as it is. i'd rather spend money on a McGuyver solution rather than letting the cable company have it.Why can't you connect it to the router as-is?BC_Programmer beat me to the same question I had.

BTW: You can make Windows think its a Laptop in power MANAGEMENT however it makes no sense to do so for what you want to achieve.I have absolutely no idea what you want to achieve here...
Are they charging you by weight ? ?Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 29, 2013, 06:56:57 PM

Why can't you connect it to the router as-is?

kk.....lemme see if i can find a cable w/ phone jack thingys on both ends.

and i need to do this cuz my cable company would charge too much. that why i don't use their router. my monthly bill would go up about $15 a month. so why should i pay them when i can get my own for free. also, i'm sure that what the cable company would do to me in this instance is run another cable to goto the other comp and then up my monthly bill for the privilege have running 2 desktops.

since i got WIFI and all my friends that aren't hooked up, bring their laptops to my house. and that got me to thinking....why is a desktop different from a laptop. i should be able to use WIFI on the desktop.

i'm gonna find that phone cable....i know there's at least 1 around here somewhere. and i'll let ya know if it works.nope...that didn't work. any other IDEAS? Dave, you mentioned making windows think that my desktop is a laptop. when you get time could you walk me thru what i have to do?Wi-Fi adapters for Desktops work practically then same as do laptops with built-in Wi-Fi. Below is a link that shows some popular items on Amazon that might work for you.

Or cheek a local store like target, Best Buy or Wall-mart.I suspect you don't have a router, but a modem.

A Router let's you connect a smaller network into a larger one.

A Modem let's you connect to the internet.

Now where this clouds is that Modems sometimes come with routing capabilities, but they are often limited. For example, it may be that your model provides wireless but only one LAN cord. That said you mentioned connecting it with something "phone like" before.

Other than that, you've basically described a problem that says your router is working completely differently from every other router on Earth; afraid I have to apply Occam's Razor on that one and conclude that we might not be dealing with a Router at all, but rather a Modem.nope.....gotta Motorala modem and a Linksys router. the modem was supplied by the cable company, but the router is mine. been trying to config a way for the new desktop to access both by creating a network hub from my existing comp. but when i get to a certain point, they always say it's now time to call your ISP provider. and the ISP provider won't touch it since i don't use their router.

now, i'm no tekkie but i'm not stupid. i know there's a simple solution staring me in the face. i just need to go down the right path to solve the prob. ugh....extremely frustrated.

*************

way back in the day when laptops were new, i got one and had to use an antennae to use it and it had like zero range, so basically, i had to sit near the desktop to use my laptop. so i thought, since both comps are right next to each other, i could use that antennae but neither comp will accept it. though i'm pinched atm for $$, i'll start shopping for deals on usb adapters....but was really wanting to do this w/out add'l cost.

The modem connects to the routers INTERNET labeled port. Then connect all computers to the 4 or more available ports or if its a wifi router connect them to the wifi if you have that configured properly.

Here attached below is a Linksys Router for example to show the CONNECTIONS. You will need to connect using a Network Cable and not a Phone Cord between computer and router, it has to be 8 wires/gold pins at each end when you look at the plastic. If you see less than 8 then its the wrong cable type. Each home internet connection with a router can connect up to 254 devices as long as DHCP is set up to not restrict the DHCP pool to just 1 computer. I have never seen any configured that way and it would have to be intentional to restrict DHCP down to a single IP address as a range.

There is no need to make the desktop configured as a laptop, so I am not going to share info on how to do this because this wont help fix the problem you are having and it would be the wrong configuration for a desktop computer.
