Solve : microphone is not working?

hello friends,

I have Compaq Presario c500 notebook. I have plugged in headphone/microphone CORRECTLY in the port. i can LISTEN the OUTPUT but my voice is not getting detected.
is there any extra setting I need to do?

here platform is Windows XP SP3
