I am having problems with my modem. I have a windows xp computer with a dial-up connection. every time i try to connect to the internet, my computer FREEZES up. i hear the dial tone and the "noise" that follows it, but when it trys to connect to the internet, the pc freezes up. i cant even do a control+alt+delete. i have to hold the power button so the the pc goes off. i tried several modems, even installing a new one, but the problem is the same. with each modem i installed, i query the modem in the diagnostics section of the modem properties and everything is fine. in the general section of the modem properties it says "This DEVICE is working PROPERLY." i then started troubleshooting with the windows troubleshoot, answering every QUESTIONS, and it said to check the COMMUNICATIONS port. i check the properties in the communications port and it also says "This device is working properly." i dont know what else to do. When did this start happening / any new software installed / firewall on? / tried booting into Safe Mode w/networking and dialing out / tried Hyperterminal?

have you asked them for help?
if you have are you using and inserted the correct dialup number, username and password?

if there is a space inserted wrongly or a dot or comma or a capitol letter in the wrong place the hangshake will not be accepted.

the noises you hear the dialup number tones calling the server then there is a hand shake( which is the scratchy sounds) which consists of the user name and password for confirmation,then it should latch on after that.
