Solve : motherboard with possibly x38 chipset??

Answer»

hey guys, I have a problem...a "I cant choose a freaking mobo" problem.

I am going to be building a Q6600 system, after-market cool it, and hope I can reach 3GHz. The only problem is that I cant find a good motherboard. Money is not a limitation for me, but I dont want to pay some rediciulous amount for a motherboard.
So my here is my future pc:
Q6600 (AM cooling)
8800GT (From XFX i think) and possibly a 2nd one in the future
OCZ platinum 800MHz DDR2
WD 500GB HDD
DVD burner
700 Watts PSU (For SLI)

Ive been looking at the Asus maximus formula, however I noticed that it is Crossfire mobo, and now i am lost as to what i want for a mobo so that it would be able to OC fine with respectable results. I am also going to try to OC my videocard(s), but again the motherboard is what I NEED advice on. please help me!

I would rather have an X38 chipset motherboard because I saw somewhere it is the newest, and that it will support next gen CPUS..

Also whats the best aftermarket air cooling solution for Q6600 that worked best for you (if you have Q6600) ?

Thanks in advance  Some people like going to Disneyland. I like answering questions like this

1. Your motherboard will either have to be 780i SLi or 680i SLi-based. X38 does not support SLi, so you won't be able to add another 8800 GT later on.

I suggest going with the T1/A1 revision 680i SLi motherboard from eVGA. It's the best for Quad-Core overclocking.

2. With the Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme, you will be able to get you G0-stepping Q6600 to 3.6Ghz PRETTY easily on that motherboard. Also, you'll need the Scythe S-FLEX 120mm 1600RPM fan with it.

3. I reccomend waiting until December, when the new 8800 GTS will be released, which will possibly be a better choice than the 8800 GT.

4. If you can, wait 'till January for the new 45nm-based Quad-Core CPUs, that will allow you to overclock to 4.0Ghz easily, and will be a lot more powerful.

5. Ditch that RAM. But TWO of these instead (4GB total)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220144

6. Instead of buying a single 500GB HDD, buy two 320GB HDDs and set them up in a RAID-0 array.

Enjoy!i recommend the p5n32e sli mobo from asus. it comes in three types, standard, plus, and premium.

as for the CPU cooler, i second the ultra 120, it dropped my temps about 20C.

an added note, you may want to increase your PSU to at least an 800W if you plan to GO SLI.ty for the suggestion Jess607 ill definitly look into the Thermalright Ultra

Yes homer, I might have to do just that with all these changes that I might take from my original plan. 800W PSU seems like a great idea, and its also a pain in the *censored* to find for reasonable price

After giving it some thought, I figured that I really dont need to get the 8800 GT as the ATI 3870 is very overclockable and wont void warrenty if i do so. it is also way cheaper..i can get 2 for ~450 and they will perform way better than the GTX or ultra (or they say). I went to a computer store and he told me his Maximus formula oced his Quad core to 3.7GHz and his mem to about 1400 MHz on that motherboard. I wont take it that far (im not crazy) but i am starting to like ATi motherboards better. Does having 2 3870 cards sound like a good idea?

PS If i am to overclock the ATi card(s) I would have to get aftermarket cooling to keep it cool Under load (about 60C max under load)

No no no.

First of all, the P5N32E-SLi is NOT good for Quads, unlike the board I suggested.

Secondly, an 8800 GT, based on the 65nm G92 takes much less power than the rest of the 8800 series. You can run it on a 400w PSU, and SLi won't take more than 600w Quote from: Quakky on November 22, 2007, 07:37:14 PM

GOD NO.

The HD 3870 is an extremely poor choice. And as for the overclocking; it won't be any better than the 8800 GT.

But aside from that, the performance of two HD 3870s can barely compete with an 8800 Ultra. It's a failed concept, risen from the dead.

You may be able to get two for 450$, but you can get two 8800 GTs for 500$, and the performance will be doubled if you overclock. And as for the warranty.. well, no enthusiest I know cares about the warranty, but the stock cooler on the 8800 GT is very capable. If you want a higher overclock, you'll have to volt-mod anyway.Hey Jess607,

according to this website : http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/3270-his-radeon-hd3870-review-crossfire-performance-preview.html
the card is pretty good in cross-fire. and i remember reading somewhere that 2 overclocked 3870s will beat 2 SLIed 8800GT's
ill try to find the site. Also Isnt crossfire more efficiant than SLI? Quote from: Quakky on November 22, 2007, 08:16:01 PM

I am warning you. Do not buy this card.
It's based on the same R600 core. The core is catatonic. In old games, the performance will be good, but in new games it will be awful.
The problem, is it's dated architecture. Anyone who uses that architecture now is a fool.

And there is no chance in *censored* that an HD 3870 can beat an 8800 GT. Not even with the best cooling.
And that's at STOCK. You forget that the 8800 GT can overclock just as far.alright man, thanks for the warning. I guess that guy at the pc place was taking out of his you know what...

Should I just wait until the new year and see what new stuff is coming out? I heard the new GTS from Nvidia is supposed to be better than the GT, and I also heard something about a new ATi ...or should i just get the GT and the motherboard you suggested?

Thanks Quote from: Quakky on November 23, 2007, 10:25:11 AM

If you can wait 'till January, that would be best in all counts. The beggining of the year is almost always the best time to buy.http://www.tomsgames.com/us/2007/11/20/crysis_sli/

just wanted to show this review with SLI enabled in Crysis....What the heck went wrong there?

Still i think they use a different mobo than wat u had suggested Quote from: Quakky on November 23, 2007, 10:07:14 PM

Hard to say. Could be a driver problem, could be anything else.
Never trust a single review, and wait for better drivers.Hello guys!
I Finally built the beast and I am having minimual issues with it (something wrong with the power button on the asus motherboard) but I was able to OC my cpu to 3.5GHz with no sweat (took 3 seconds) and thats on Stock cooling and the stock paste that comes on the cooling. I still havnt used the aftermarket cooling because I really dont know if it will make a difference. and I really dont need more than 3.5GHz really..here is the best part, Im getting bios reading of 40C in the bios when im at 3.5GHz, which is great...right? lol

I still havnt installed an operating system yet on it, because I dont know if i should get 64bit version or just install the good old win xp pro 32bit.. so what do u guys think i should install if im gonna be gaming on it mostly?

Also if anyone knows how to solve the following problems that would be great:
1. The power button on the Asus maximus formula motherboard doesnt seem to work. I click it and the pc doesnt turn on...when the pc is on i click it and it doesnt turn off my pc, however the reset button works great and i tested it many times.

2. I have the Antec 900 gamer and its a pretty BIG case, however i bought a Cooler Master 750W PSU and I put it in there..and the cables just got freaking crowded and I am having problems putting everything in the case comfertably, so any suggestions on how to tidy that up would be great

3. as i said above i used the stock thermal paste that came with the stock CPU cooler, but anyone knows what it is? If I use AS5 would I get better CPU temps (lower than 40C on 3.5GHz quad cpu)?

THX in advance! 1. Make sure it's connected the right way round.  I have done this before with many connectors.
2. Try using cable ties to tie all the cables together, and maybe a bit of string or similar to attach them to the top of the case.  I have managed to stuff my cables into the unused drive bays before, not sure if this is an option for you but worth a shot.
3. 40C on a 3.5Ghz quad core is pretty sweet.  Is that idle or load?  Run Prime95 on each core (so 4 times in total to max out the CPU) for around 12 hours to check stability, and then take the temperatures again.I thought you were going to wait 'till January
