Solve : Motherboards kept on carpet...?

Answer»

I keep track of quite a few components in my storage closet for computer stuff at school...

Anyways, down in the bottom shelf, there are a ton of motherboard (I have no real use for them RIGHT now, and I dont know who put them in there like that).
They are all on either a kind of foam (soft) box padding, without being inside ESD bags (we dont have any) or on top of OLD carpet.

Is that a not-so-good-way to store these? (And hard drives) Think about it. Static electricity can destroy those boards. Have you ever walked across carpet in socks and then touched someone? Get them off the carpet. Even putting them inside of a cardboard box would be better than that. When you buy new computer components they come in anti-static bags. I always save those bags for other parts I might need to transport or store. We don't have those bags anymore (no, I didn't throw them away... this stuff has been around before I was put in charge of it)

I could just put them in the cupboard with nothing around them... is it fine if I stack them by layers with cardboard seperating them?
Its probably the best I can do.Quote from: Zylstra on November 16, 2008, 11:46:27 PM

I never have problems with mine.I just keep parts
in a cardboard box with a plastic liner. As mentioned the anti-static bags are the best way...in a pinch seperated by cardboard will work but is not ideal.
As far as carpeting a definite no-no. Along with the static concerns certain dyes (red/grey ) use oxides for their color qualities which is basically a metallic component.

If you stop in your Local PC shop and ask they'll probably hand you a few dozen anti-static bags for nothing...another reason to support local small businesses. We dont have computer stores here... Why not just throw them away and use the space for SOMETHING that will actually be used in the future? If they're just LAYING around with nothing hooked up to them, they probably aren't worth keeping.... and then with any new parts you want to add to the pile.... put them in an anti-stat bag.The motherboards arent old....

They are on standby in case one of our more generic computers ceases to work.
Most of the power SUPPLY's in the custom builds are cheap, and many have gone out already.
