Answer» Hi, I have a COUPLE of (surely) newbish questions. I have very little experience with computer hardware because I've bought most of my previous computers built from the manufacturer and didn't make any custom adjustments on them.
In 2005 I bought a Dimension 4700c from Dell. I think it might be considered a model # DHP. It includes a PS-5161-7DS2 power supply with a Maxtor 160 GB SATA HD. But I don't have a video card for the system (it's integrated) and I want to connect my computer to a new TV that I'll be getting so that I can watch shows/movies that I've got on my computer on the new TV. Is the best way to do this to get a video card with TV-out, or is there a better way?
Anyway, because I couldn't fit a new video card into my small case I bought a new case (an Antec P182). Should I be able to just PUT my old power supply, motherboard, etc. into the new case? I'm guessing that this answer is yes. However, I don't have an extra slot on my motherboard I believe for a new videocard. So I'm guessing I need to BUY a new motherboard. Will any motherboard be compatible with my power supply? If not, how do I determine which ones are compatible or not? Is my current 160W power supply big enough to handle powering the stuff I currently have as well as a new video card, or should I look into a larger power supply?
Also, there's no reason why I shouldn't be able to transfer my CDRW drive to my new computer right? I wasn't sure if any of the components on these small cases were non-transferable.
If it helps the service manual for my old computer is here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim4700c/en/OM/en/N56841LRs.pdf
Thanks for any support you can give me, I appreciate it dell makes some pretty unique stuff for their cases, 160W is really small PSU. As far as connecting to your tv, look for a card with HDMI out, as that is the best quality, or you could just get a VGA to RGB, or Svideo converter for cheap on eBay. If youre gonna get a new video card, get a new PSU, DEPENDING on how beefy your system is, and if you get a nice new mobo, id get a 400W.Another option with the TV hookup is a DVI to HDMI. I recently got a new 8800 GT that supports HD, but it doesn't actually have an HDMI hookup on it.
