Answer» What a pain! No warnings, nothing. I was just at my computer this afternoon, and all of sudden it froze. I forced it to restart, only to start getting really bad messages: - HD failure is imminent. Please back up your data. Press F2 to continue. - Disk boot failure, insert system disk. At some point, I managed to get to my Desktop, but it took a looooong time, and my startup programs icons were loading extremely slow. Couple of them showed up, and THEN my HD started to grind, and click, so I KNEW. I tried to run CHKDSK from Command Prompt, but no dice. Dead, dead, dead. Can you believe this? 6 weeks old?
Finally I called Compaq, and I'm suppose to have new HD by the middle of coming week. But, man...I just brought my Vista to a perfect state, installed all needed programs, and I'll have to go through same crap again. *censored*! I'm almost ready to cry
I'm back with my old Win 2K computer, and after using new one, this one feels extremely slow!!!!So sorry to hear about what happened.Broni, I feel your pain! If you let that drive rest overnite and hook it up as a slave in the Win2K rig you may get lucky that it'll run long enough to grab your data. I've been this lucky a few times...not always but a few times. Thanks guys. What I'm gonna do, I'm gonna buy another HD today, replace bad one, until Compaq HD arrives, hook up bad one as a slave, and see what I can do. There is really not much data there. I still kept a lot of stuff on my 2K. It's more about lost settings. When Compaq's HD arrives, I'll set the one, I wanna buy today, as an image backup. Which should have been done long, long time ago. Oh well, we always learn, don't we?What are you currently using for backups ? ?Hey, a quick question here... First of all, removing bad drive was a snap. Not like old days, when you had to almost hurt yourself to get into all screws. Here, there were just two nicely visible screws, and a spring, which when released, removed a whole HD bracket. Disconnect power, and data cable, and a whole piece is in your hand. Anyway, inside, I can see plenty of available power cables, but as for data cables... There are two ports on mobo. One goes to HD, the other one to DVD burner. I'm gonna need THREE OUTPUTS: one for DVD burner, and two for two HDs. Do I need to get some data cable splitter, or what?As for backups, as I said there was not much there, and I kept it on my 2K machine. This time, I'm gonna go for with a clone for sure. That's why, I wanna buy another HD.If they are IDE drives each channel will take 2 drives...are they both SATA ? ? Thin cable design.I blame vista, lol...ok-- not really...But I gotta rage on vista... I've yet to see ANYTHING good come from that operating system. And if you think your new one is a lot faster than your old 2k machine, try putting 2k on your new one and watch it FLY. haha Sorry I still don't care for vista, it's nice looking but other than that it's an annoying pain in the rear, that requires way too much of EVERYTHING in a computer to run. I usually run xp pro on my laptopand the cpu's usually around 140 - 160° I stuck vista on it once, and it never fell below 179° (191 is the highest i've ever seen it, becuase after that it's overheated and it reboots). If I was buying a new computer right now and it came with vista, i'd be wiping it off immediately. It's soooooooooooo much wear on a hard drive, and for what??? Some new bells and whistles to bother the *censored* out of me when all I want to do is get online and do some stuff. Sorry for that, but that's my feelings on vista. But, at least you learned to alwyas keep a backup.. I keep two backups. my laptop drive is partitioned and i keep my stuff on drive D, and my desktop's drive d is NEARLY, not entirely, the same as the laptop's d, and my desktops drive H is an image of it's drive D.. So I have 3 copies of pretty much the same thing. I have files on my hard drive that i've had since like 1997. I'd freak out if I lost it all.pudco...he had a hard drive fail... it wouldn't have mattered if he was running Windows 3.1....

I know, it was a joke SILLY man... That's why I siad "ok-- not really...But I gotta rage on vista..." How long have you been running Vista ? ?

Just because the Beta testers left lots of bugs in Vista, doesn't mean the OS is ****ing useless.
Sorry for my language.

If you have 4GB RAM and a 2.00GHZ processor, then you can watch Vista fly.
If you can tell me why Vista is really a useless, slow OS, I'll stop drinking TURPENTINE for your sake.Alright...let's go to good news.. I bought 500gig HD yesterday, and reinstalled Vista, and all HP crap from Recovery Disks (took about 4 hours!!!). Then I uninstalled HP crap, and started to install my stuff, and I played with settings. I'm probably 60% there. New drive (250gig), which should come in a day, or two, I'll keep for primary image (finally!!), and some other backup. *censored*! It takes time. Just to keep you guys updated, and let you know, that I'm gonna be slow. I can imagine my inbox...must be exploding. I'll check on you later.
P. S. It's SATA, patio. I tried to to hook it up as a SECONDARY, but it's invisible. Nowhere to find. Must be totally dead by now, and I don't have much more time to play with it. Maybe on weekend.
