my cd and dvd rom both suddelnly stopped working.

if i go to 'my computer' the icons for the cd rom and dvd drives are MISSING.

if i open device manager and check properties it says this--

for my cd drive
Windows successfully loaded the device DRIVER for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)


and for my DVD drive: Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)


It seems like too much of a coincidence that both the cd rom and the dvd rom went dead at the same time. it's a backup computer that my son uses so it's not connected to the internet.

help would be greatly appreciated.
Go to your Computer Manufacturer's website, go to Downloads and Drivers, look for your SPECIFIC computer model, and DOWNLOAD and reinstall the drivers.Remove all power to the mahine.
Open the case and carefully re-seat all drive connections.
There will be 2 for each drive...one data one for power.Another option...

Try one of these:

2. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on downloaded file, and ALLOW registry merge.
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.
