Solve : My new purchased HDD isn't stable enough?

Answer»

I have just purchased an external 3.5 inches HDD, it is driven by external PSU.
The problem is that whenever I plug it to my XP, it can be detected, but after a few seconds later it will disappear from My COMPUTER, and then the auto-run menu will pop out.

Please help!
Do you not want the AUTORUN feature enabled then?
You can disable this.
Doess the device reappear in My Computer after it disappears? Quote

My XP said one of the USB port is defected, something like this.
I wonder if I have to install some software or?
One end of the connector is Firewire and the other the USBIf Windows says your USB port has a problem, it probably has.
Try a different USB port. Quote

Try a different USB port.

I have plugged my USB Flash drive to that USB port, and it works.
Do I have to run some software for the HDD to work properly? No, you shouldn't need any software or drivers for a USB HDD under XP.

The author of the Web site strongly recommended Windows Users to disable the auto-run function.
Why?
Because it can be annoying for one thing, and more IMPORTANTLY it can be used to spread viruses - the autorun file can automatically launch a virus contained on a CD, flash drive etc.
Also, it can slow your PC down.
I always disable autorun/autoplay on my PCs. Quote
