Solve : My PC won't recognize any media that I put into my DVD & DVD-RW drives until...?

Answer»

My PC won't recognize any media that I put into my DVD & DVD-RW drives.

They are some hand-me-downs from friends and I'm wondering if I did SOMETHING weird when I installed them.

The only way I can get the computer to recognize the media is to go into the Properties for each drive and click "Populate" in the Volumes tab. Then I can DOUBLE click the drive icon and go about my business.

I've downloaded all the latest firmware updates (thatI know of) and un/re-installed the drives. The problem still exists.

I guess I can live with this if I HAD to but it makes doing anything I do with those drives very tedious.

The drives & computer in question are:
SONY DDU1615 (Master)
PIONEER DVR-112D (Slave)
DELL DIMENSION 8100
Did you have any CD drives installed before and were you having the same problems with those drives? or is it just for these new drives?  Any other information would be appreciated so that we know how to direct you.CD Drives don't need drivers.

Try this:

Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign NEXT to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled. Thanks guys.

The Device Manager trick didn't work...  problem still exists.

The error I get when I double-click the drove icon is this:
E:\ is not accessible
Incorrect Function

(Same with F:)

These are both replacement drives, and the problem started with their installation.

The original drives were the following:
NEC DV-5800A
Philips CDD 4801/81

If it was only one drive, I would think that the problem is within the drive itself, but both are having the same problem and they are two different manufacturer and I got them from 2 different people.

BTW, I'm running Windows XP.MusicMatch or Adaptec EasyCD installed on this machine ? ?MAYBE a bad cable? Quote from: patio on March 03, 2009, 08:44:56 AM

MusicMatch or Adaptec EasyCD installed on this machine ? ?

MusicMatch is...  I think Adaptec EasyCD might have been at one time, but I don't remember.

Maybe a bad cable?

That was my first thought.  I've tried 3 IDE cables...  all same result.  In fact, with one of the cables, the computer doesn't even recognize the existence of the Sony DDU1615. Quote from: patio on March 03, 2009, 08:44:56 AM

Upon jump starting my memory, I did indeed have Easy CD Creator 4 installed (as well as MMJ), but when we switched from WinME to XP, it wouldn't work.  I think I have Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 on there now as well at Nero 7.

In case you are wondering, when we switched to XP, I had to do something with the registry I think but the drives worked FINE after that.
