Solve : NAS? |

Answer» HI, I am going to jump into the world of nas, but im totally ignorant on the subject. basically i want to backup, print server, and access my files on the web. I want storage of about 1TB and preferably 2 x 1tb drives configured as raid 1 for extra security in case a drive fails. It would be really nice if I could backup using Acronis direct to the nas, but if necessary I can copy the backup to the nas?. I have looked at a QNAP TS-210, A Dlink DNS-323, and a THECUS N2200. I obviously dont want to spend a fortune. I like the idea of a usb port to expand the capacity but i dont think you can do this with the dlink? I have also read that the thecus is very slow? Any ideas as the best way to go? Many Thanks You may now be seated I did some research on this one INTENDING to buy, but then decided against it. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=586 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136346&cm_re=my_book_world_edition-_-22-136-346-_-ProductQuote from: Computer_Commando on May 12, 2010, 04:41:59 PM I did some research on this one intending to buy, but then decided against it. Thanks for that, but I really like the idea of raid 1 and having a print server. If you did not need the device to function as a print server, the lower cost D-Link DNS-321 might be a good choice. See it here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822155009 Many printers are network-capable, meaning they can be connected to a router and shared over the network. This eliminates the need for a print server. I gather your printer is not network capable.Quote from: soybean on May 13, 2010, 09:55:49 AM The Dlink DNS-323 seems like a good choice for your requirements. What I am now wondering is seeing I will have to buy a couple of 1 tb hard drives for whatever NAS i buy, could I put the new hard drives into 1 of a couple of old pcs I have and use freenas?? To do this do you know if the old pc has to have raid built in?? And yes 2 of my 3 printers have wired ethernet ports Thanks again Quote from: licoriceallsorts on May 13, 2010, 05:00:39 PM To do this do you know if the old pc has to have raid built in??Either that or GET a raid controller expansion card and install it in the computer.Quote from: soybean on May 13, 2010, 09:47:15 PM Either that or get a raid controller expansion card and install it in the computer. Hi, Thanks for the response, I notice that on Ebay they have combination raid/sata cards pretty cheap, might be the way to go? Do you know if you can boot from a sata controller card?? Neither of my old puters have sata, but the proposed p4 2.4g has raid 1. |
