Solve : Need HDD for old computer?

Answer»

I have just gotten an old Dell workstation 670. It came with a 36 gig 10k 68P seagate. That HDD has been removed. I was wondering if this system can have a non SCSI drive installed in it. All the SCSI drives I can find are small and expensive. I don't need a ton of storage3-500 gig will do all I need. Is there an adapter or something I can use?

What's in it.
2x 80546K 3.8G, 1M, XEON Nocona 800EQ processors.
2x DIMM 1G, 400M 64x72, 8, 240, 2XR8 Memory cards.
2x DIMM 512, 400M 64x72, 8, 240, 1XR8 Memory cards.
Cable hard drive SCSI, 4 drop.
Nvidia Quadro FX3400 video card.

Not that I have any CLUE as to what that all means.
I know it's old, but I'm just hoping to use it for my wife and kids to surf the internet and get them off my my other system. Any help would be much appreciated.
Check if there is a SATA or IDE port on the motherboard:

IDE:

SATA:

If not, you should be able to get a card that you can install into one of your motherboard's PCI/PCIe slots that will give you either IDE or SATA ports.Dell site says:
Quote

Integrated Serial ATA/150 w
Optional Ultra 320 SCSI con

Edit: on eBay drives from 20 to 60 GB SATA SELL for under $60, new, shipping about $10 or less.
That looks like a machine worth keeping. It can run 64 BIT XP ProThanks for all the info. I found 2 SATA ports on the mother board. Helps to have build schematic inside the system.

3 more questions.

I saw a hard drive at the dell site that said SATA 600. Is it the same or should I look for regular SATA?

Can I unhook the 4 drop SCSI cable from the motherboard if I go to SATA?

I have seen XP 64 bit full version on line, but it says an operating system is required?? If I installing an operating system what do I need one for.Quote from: wallerus on June 23, 2011, 01:24:06 PM

Older standard SATA is fine.

You need Operating system to:
Get on Internet
Play games
Watch Netflix

Almost any current Windows OS would work, but you either need to buy a legal copy nor get the OEM version from DEL, if that machine has COA sticker on case.Planned on buying a copy. Don't want all the Dell stuff with it. Got a copy for my home machine I love running just plain windows, but it is 32 bit and I want to run 64 on this one. Just trying to make sure I do it right. I don't do pirate.
