Solve : New Build...Safe to turn on??

Answer»

LOL, MAYBE it's a stupid question, but I don't want to ruin anything.  I finished putting my pc together, plugged in everything as per the instructions included with each part.  I *think* everything is hooked up properly.

But for arguments sake, let's say I plugged something into the wrong spot.  Would that hurt the mobo, or that particular piece?hey dude dont be so scared nothing will happen to your pc as long as u have the instructions carefully

by the congrats for your first pc (seems to me) Make sure the I/o header connections are right or it wont boot.  The cables from the case to the board.  Unless your psu is too strong for the board or if you made an error connecting the power to the devices you shouldnt have any problems. Thanks for the encouragement, I just want to be sure.  I spent a little more than I really should have, so I can't afford any mistakes.Triple check all your connections...
YES indeed things can get damaged here.
Have someone who has done successful builds before look things over before firing it up.

Safely ignoring the advice above isn't a bad idea...

Squall you have at least 2 or 3 machines not running if i remember correctly....Please refrain from advising on new builds, opalholic, No disrespect intended to the others that have given you the benefit of their opinion on your question. I am certain they mean well. However from previous assistance from Patio i urge you to follow his cautionary approach on this issue. He has assisted me on many hardware issues and seems to posses more than average knowledge in this area.taking a bit more time could save you much grief and cost.goodluck, truenorth Quote from: patio on June 14, 2008, 04:12:51 PM

If this thing was funnier it would work so much better.  I only have one that I'm working on cause I dont have the parts order or anything.  Alot of my pcs are severly used an have problems, If I can fix it, I got there money out of it. Quote from: patio on June 14, 2008, 04:12:51 PM

what he said. no matter how boring it seems, triple check all your wiring!! and if your not sure where something goes...DONT HOOK IT UP!! ASK here or ask someone you know who has experience with computer hardware.opalholic

Please give US an update as to how your new build turned out! If it starts smoking, pour a glass of water in it.

Just kidding, DON'T DO THAT.

Triple check all your connections
, like Patio said. Go over your manuals and make sure you've done everything to the manufacturer's specifications (cable connections, jumpers, etc.). Make sure all of your hardware is seated properly. Make sure the CPU fan is securely fastened and you've applied the appropriate amount of thermal gunk between the heat sink and the processor.

And yes, plugging something in wrong can damage components. I had a guy bring me a PC once he had built himself and it started smoking when he turned it on. Turned out he had attached the floppy drive's power cable wrong (hard to do, but he managed it) and the 5 volt line was feeding into the ground. The smoke was coming from the melting plastic power connector....

TRIPLE CHECK ALL YOUR CONNECTIONSThanks forgot to mention that, Not really sure how he would have done that.  Got it all up and running!  No problems what-so-ever!   Set up what I needed to in the BIOS, installed XP Pro, and now I'm installing the drivers that came with the MOBO.  Which brings me to another question.  Before I get to it, you should know that I did not enable RAID as I have only one hard drive and made only one partition.  To the best of my knowledge, RAID is for those who have several hard drives.  I may be wrong?  The hard drive is SATA, not IDE.

So as I said, I am installing the MOBO drivers, and the installation utility is asking if I want it to install the following:

1.   NVIDIA storage driver optimized for nForce SATA controller that will replace the driver that came with windows.

2.   A RAID controller driver which is required if SATA RAID is enabled in BIOS.

3. RAID Manager application software.

I can only TELL it yes or no.  I cannot choose which it will install, it is all or none.

What should I do?choose none. you dont have RAID enabled nor do you have at least two drives.I thought it was that simple, but just wanted to make sure.
