However, there may have been an issue with the thermal compound. I applied the stock compound on perfectly when I put it on, but I did dragged the heatsink a very tiny bit (and quickly dragged it back) by accident when trying to hook it with the retention brackets. That may have messed with the compound a LITTLE, although I could be overly paranoid.

If that has led to a less-than-perfectly-cooled CPU (which it may not have) then you would not have the CPU "playing dead". Even if you had been severely slack and CLUMSY with the HS compound & heatsink installation, the cpu would still start and run for a while (a few minutes at least). My money is on the RAM (I think)
That's good to know. Given that we now know that the compatibility of the RAM is dubious, what should I do? Should I contact the RAM company, the mobo company, or the seller? What would you guys do in my situation? What I would do first is get the RAM replaced with some that is on the motherboard maker's compatibilty list. Not just type and spec but preferably a brand and maker's type number that is listed. That way I have muscle for a motherboard return if that becomes necessary. Did you buy them all from the same company? If they will take it back and replace with listed compatible RAM, I would try that.
Alright, thanks for the help. I'll go look into returning my current ram/ buying new ram now.

How well do you guys think we've cleared out all the other rival hypotheses? I'm afraid of spending all this money, then finding out that it was actually my motherboard. If you can get a faulty motherboard (they do exist) replaced with a good one, then you have lost nothing except a little time and maybe some postage.
As I'm looking through the list of compatible RAM (dated 7/16/09), many are no longer being sold. Does this mean that the list is simply outdated, and that RAM is probably not the problem?

Thanks for all the help so far.I just looked through the Newegg Reviews for the RAM, and people cited using it with the M4A79XTD EVO (http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=vk9Pqxby9MjO0WHm#) and M4A785TD-M EVO (http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=QHbvGVB1mXmmD8qQ), both of which seem similar to my motherboard.

In addition, neither had the RAM on their compatibility lists (one with 8/3/09, and the other with 10/14/09 last update for the pdf). This lends me to believe that it's the motherboard that's the problem - would it be more appropriate to send in the motherboard for a new one?

EDIT:

I also just found out the DVD Drive opens and closes now (It didn't before). Does this mean that the motherboard is able to communicate to the other parts then? Perhaps it could be a problem with the motherboard communicating with monitors? No BIOS indicates an issue with hardware. At this point, your goal is to see the BIOS on the screen and to enter the BIOS. Disconnect all drives and the video card, if the motherboard has onboard video. Can't believe I haven't THOUGHT to tried that! No BIOs appeared even then, so I figure it's probably the mobo.

I'll send it in on Monday - what's the best way to remove and store the processor while I'm waiting for a non-defective mobo?Quote from: Darusame on December 05, 2009, 06:49:36 PM

You threw out all the cpu packaging? Keep all packaging until the warranty runs out.I didn't throw out any of the packaging, but I wasn't SURE if it was better to keep my processor in the packaging rather than open air. I'm kinda worried that some particles have gotten into the plastic casing that came with it, and that those particles would get into the processor. Does that make sense? Is that being too paranoid? The processor is a sealed unit, dust cannot enter, you are being too anxious.
