Solve : New CPU Choice?

Answer»

Hey,

A while back I had a problem with my PC that I have now narrowed down to a dead CPU. So... I have decided to get a new one. Nothing fancy, its not a great PC and I'm PLANNING to upgrade in a while so I don't want to spend an excessive amount of money.

Anyway, my motherboard is a Elitegroup 661GX-M7 version 1.1, here is a link to a spec's page, however it is for version 3.0(from what I can tell they are pretty similar). My dead CPU is a Intel P4 SL9CA if it matters.

I have narrowed my choices down to a Pentium Dual Core Processor, probably a SLA8X and I am wondering if the SLA8X is compatible with my motherboard. According to the motherboard's specs, it supports a FBS of 553MHz, but supports overclocking to 800MHz. However, these specs are for v3.0 and I'm not sure if they are the same for v1.1. My dead CPU was 533MHz, but the SLA8X is 800MHz, so if the specs on the website are RIGHT for v1.1 will my motherboard support this new processor. If not, could you suggest a better choice?

Thanks,

this one should keep you going until you upgrade. Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately I'm not in the US so newegg isn't an option and I couldn't find that CPU in any Australian online store. However, I have decided to buy a new PC and fix that one up later as a server or something.

thanks for the HELP,
