Solve : New graphics card?

Answer»

Hi everyone. I purchased a new graphics card-- GeForce 9400 GT 1 GB DDR2 PCI Graphics Card-- for my Dimension E310. Accessless replied to my post on June 18 saying that I should upgrade my psu. A Dell tech said that they would send an extra cable that can be attached to the system board to give it more power. Is that true? I REALLY do not want to damage my pc. Any answers will be helpful. maryhigginsrice

Dell Dimension E310
WindowsXP Home Edition SP3
Philips DVD+RW DVD8801
HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR81643
1.99 of Ram
Nvidia GeForce FX 5200
2nd HD
56K PCI Data Fax Modem
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz
Home Network
Belkin Wireless Router
230wI would definitely upgrade your power supply. Those are cheap enough to get. Check on newegg.com they usually have some really good deals. I just got a 600W PSU from them for around $35 shipping included. I'm not sure about the cable to ADD more power to the card, but a PSU upgrade would be a good idea, ESPECIALLY with a better video card like that. Not to be cold or anything but a $35.00 PSU is never a good idea...Quote from: patio on July 02, 2010, 02:36:23 PM

Depends on who you buy it from (not that I'm daft enough to do it again. I used to pick PSU's up for peanuts but they used to last about the same amount of time as peanuts)

Dell can send you an adapter (4-pin molex to 6-pin PCI-E), but that will not boost the power output of your power supply. The danger comes in when overloading a power supply, they can get very hot if they don't quickly burn themselves out.Patio, I'm usually pretty leary about buying cheap PC parts because I know that usually you get what you pay for. But it was on sale and I figured I would TRY it out ANYWAY. It's lasted me a couple months now and still going strong. Hasn't given me a bit of trouble. Sometimes you get a piece of junk, but sometimes you luck out. I'm not going to say I lucked out cause I know as soon as I do it'll crap out on me, but so far so good.
