Answer» New hard drive and need to KNOW how to install windows 7 on it. Already have windows 7 on current hard drive so not looking for full version. I've been told a factory reset and a clone using image software with a usb hard drive adapter will transfer everything over but im a little leery on doing so without guaranteeing windows 7 will transfer. So basically, whats the easiest/cheapest way to get windows 7 on my new hard drive? Toshiba SATELLITE a505 s6980 Old HD: TOSHIBA MK5055GSX New HD: TOSHIBA MK5061GSYN Too bad it wasnt a desktop as for you could install 2 hard drives and clone the drive easily with software from the drive manufacturer. With laptops its more involved with migration to a new drive. The easiest and cheapest method is to create the restore DVD set to DVD-R's, which should be in Toshiba tools I think. Its been 3 YEARS since I had to on my Toshiba Satellite. Use an external hard drive to MOVE all personal data off of the original drive to the external. Then swap hard drives and boot laptop off of DVD 1 of the recovery set and install clean windows 7, activate with Microsoft, then copy your data back from an external to your new hard drive.
A process that can save you from installing software and updates, but comes at the cost of buying the latest version of Norton Ghost is to buy Ghost, install it. And create an image to an external hard drive connected VIA USB. Then create a image boot disc that will grab the image off the external and transfer that to the new drive.
I personally like to install clean to new drives whenever possible, but if your system is highly configured and you have software installed that would take hours to reinstall you might want to go with a new version of Ghost and pass an image to an external and then back to the new drive. Every time i run backup i get errors about files that couldnt be open Is this cloned drive to be used as a backup ? ? Or what other purpose ? No it's got faster RAM so i'm looking to replace my old one as the old one is pretty slow anyway Do you have an external HDD ? ?No but if i got a usb transfer cable for hard drive wouldnt it work the same way?http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-ways-to-clone-and-copy-your-hard-drive/ Back up your files first then do a factory restore then image the drive.
