Answer» Hey there,
I got a new hard drive. (I think my old one is dead.) The new drive is: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 500MB SATA/300 16MB HDD. (Firmware: 3.AAE)
I tried to install Windows on it. I got up to where you choose which drive to install, and it says: Unknown Disk (There is no disk in this drive.)
If I hit C (to create a PARTITION in the unpartitioned space), nothing happens. If I hit enter, I get the blue screen of death.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: setupdd.sys

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Also, the drive itself has this on the label: _______________________________ Installation Summary ... 3) Serial ATA controllers or systems may have CUSTOM drivers. Be careful to select the correct drive. ... Windows XP or 2000 prepares the drive during installation. ... _______________________________
So I guess I don't know where to start.
I've seen in other threads where they say: Check in BIOS if the drive is recognized. But my BIOS doesn't SEEM to have that sort of option. ** I'll try to post a "screenshot" of my BIOS.
Also, I don't quite know how to check to see about custom drivers, or how to install them if I needed them.
Thanks! Troy Okay, here are two "screenshots" of my BIOS
First
And this one shows the lower selections, after SCROLLING down.
Thanks again for all the help!
Cheers, TroyWhat flavor of Windows are you attempting to install ? ? More info.Hey patio, Sorry about that.
Windows XP is the version. (Pro, if it matters)
Computer Info: Acer Aspire E650 (Was originally configured/stock with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005)
Don't know much more about it...This should solve your problem...

Please read it carefully...
Make sure you have the drivers for your new hard drive available from the manufacturer. If you don't have them...go to the Seagate site and download them for your particular SATA drive.
Then follow the directions from the link I just posted.
