Solve : new hdd question?

Answer»

hello people

quick question.  i am installing my first hdd and i am trying to avoid any problems with losing my computer virginity.  i have a 20g hdd (FAT32).  i am adding a 80g WD hdd (i got it for $29, couldn't pass it up).  anyhow, my question is, if i use ntfs on the NEW drive, can i still transfer files to it from my fat32 hdd?

i don't know much about FAT32 or NTFS.That depends on your Operating System.im running xp pro, sp1.  will this be a problem?

thanks for the reply!Won't be a problem, XP can read both file system types.  There is even a conversion utility if you want to convert your FAT32 into NTFS.hey gussery,

thanks! Quote

im running xp pro, sp1....

Upgrade to SP2.
hi C_C

matter of fact i did uprgrade to sp2 a few months ago but had so many conflicts with programs and utilities that i WENT back to sp1 (BOY, that was an ADVENTURE!)

i noticed that i still get sp2 security updates one at a time.

on my new hdd i will clean install xp and update to sp2.
i want to have a 5g partition for the os and the rest for everything ELSE which i will move from my old hdd.  i'll keep a copy of xp on the old hdd (as a backup) and use the rest of the space for archiving.  sound good?  let me know. That's what I do.  I keep the 3 OS's on separate partitions, Data on another, Downloads on another, and all the Windows "junk" on the last.  The "junk" is the temporary files, paging file, environmental variables.  All are FAT32 so Win98 can see them too.

NTFS vs FAT:  read this http://www.ntfs.com/

Thanks !

Hopefully everything will go as planned.  If not, I'll be back.

Great forum, thanks again!
