Solve : new motherboard can't see HDD's?

Answer»

Bear with me. I don't have all the specs off the top of my head and I'm on a different computer. The best I can remember.

Motherboard - Abit AN8 32X
CPU - Athalon XP 64 3800+
RAM - 4 sticks of Kinston 512 (not sure of the remaining specs)
HDD #1 - WD 250Gig
HDD #2 WD 80Gig
Power supply - Thermal Take 480w (silent power)
video card - ATI Radeon 1600+ PCIE

Anyway, I'm carrying over the floppy, dvd, and cd-rom/burner to this new board. The power supply, 2 sticks of RAM, and the Hard Drives were from my old computer. I put it all together and power it up. BIOS comes up and I go though the setup. This board has an "auto-detect" feature that looks for your hard drives, might be common but I don't know. The first time through it detects both drives and I save and exit. Try to boot windows and windows goes into initial setup and then says that it did not detect any hard drive. Go back into BIOS and Primary IDE MASTER and Slave show "NONE". I attempt Auto-detect again and now it does not see my HDD's. I have checked power connections, swaped cords, tried IDE2 slot, and they don't REGISTER. I can hear them turning. Are they fried? I'd be grateful for any help can anyone give me, Thanks.

Did you choose save and exit?

If you just ESC out of the BIOS it might choose Discard changes and exit.

Try Raptor's advice and introduce only one HDD at a time...sometimes the BIOS can get confused.
If the master HDD still has an OS on it installed on the old MBoard you are going to have PROBLEMS...is this the situation here ? ?

patio. 8-)Sorry I didn't reply right away. I had to go help my parents cut downed tree limbs from that freak snow storm in Buffalo. My master HDD does have Windows XP Home on it. I am going to try to go into the Bios, restore defaults, and then try again. What are your suggestions about the Drive with the OS on it?

I'll let you know what happens.

I didn't suggest you to load default values, I asked you something else. But you can try regardless. You should only hook up the XP HDD as a slave until you are able to back up what you need from it...coming from another MBoard/build it probably won't boot correctly and you risk corrupting and or losing your data...

patio. 8-)Patio + Raptor,

Thanks for your help, and I hope you didn't think that I wasn't doing what you suggested. Anyway, A short update to my issue. I attempted all that the both of you suggested. Initially, the BIOS did see the master, but it wouldn't boot (as patio suggested), the slave did not have enough space on the disk to accept a OS, so I'm going to bite the bullet and install a 2 new Seagate Baracuda SATA HDD's, and attempt to recover what is on both old IDE HDD's later. How would you rcommend doing that?

ThanksThe most painless way would be to install Only 1 of the SATA's and get everything running properly...

Then power down, introduce the IDE with XP as a slave drive on the secondary IDE channel and use the Seagate CD that came with your new SATA drive to " clone " the XP install onto the new Seagate.

Then remove the slave, re-boot to the SATA and make sure everything is running properly.

Then install in order : the 2nd SATA...

The 2 IDE drives...

And copy away to your heart's content.

patio. 8-)How are your jumpers set?Which Jumpers? The jumpers on the back of the drives... No wonder it does not work, they are probably both set to Master on the same cable.

Make them Master and Slave. You may have to remove the drives in order to read the instructions on printed on top of them.Raptor,

The jumpers on the drives are set correctly, Master and Slave. The IDE cable is connected correctly as well. There are numerous jumpers on the motherboard as well, I just didn't know which jumpers you were refering to. This all kind of moot anymore because I've ordered 2 new drives and I'm going to install them as soon as they arrive. Thanks for your help.

You still didn't answer my very first question, though.
