Answer» Just put together a new PC build (my second ever - spec below) and I've noticed that rather than emitting a constant humming sound, it intermittently (like every minute or so) makes a 'whoosh' or 'whine' noise almost as if it were power cycling (if that's the right term). The noise rises for a few seconds, before dying back down again. It does this even when idling, so I don't see why it would just be the fans spinning up. I have temporarily unplugged all the case fans to exclude those.
It appears to be running fine, but I'm worried I may have damaged something in the build process. I built it using all the proper precautions (hard surface, ESD STRAP etc.) The only slight mistake I made was that the motherboard assembly was slightly tricky to fit into the I/O shield, which took a bit of manouvreing. I then noticed one of the stand-offs was in the wrong place. I corrected this before ever powering anything on, but I'm worried there's a CHANCE I might have damaged the REAR of the motherboard?
Maybe I'm worrying over nothing, but any advice would be much appreciated.

What is your chassis fan situation? How many of which fans I mean?
It's not like you have any moving parts other than fans Thanks Quantos I'm pleased with the way it's turned out.
You are of course correct about the fans. I was using the 3 x case fans that came with the case. But having disconnected these and LISTENED more closely, it was simply the CPU fan which was making a racket when changing speed. Probably just unlucky to get a duff one. I didn't want to have to return the cooler, so I replaced the fan with a Be Quiet! one which has solved the issue.
Feel a bit annoyed at myself for not realising that was the issue sooner. Don't be...we all from time to time ignore the obvious workin with these beasts...Glad to hear that you got it sorted
