Solve : No keyboard or mouse?

Answer»

Sorry if there's not enough information, I had to make this post very quickly. Tell me if you need more info.

I came HOME from class today to a great surprise. All of a sudden my computer has decided to stop taking INPUT from my keyboard or mouse. Earlier today it was working fine, but for some reason it hasn't ever since. This occurs during both bootup(can't GET into BIOS) and at the Vista login screen.

I've tried restarting it, switching USB ports, and nothing has worked. I know it's not the keyboard or mouse because they both work on other computers. My monitor and speakers still work fine(both on separate video and sound cards). My iPod also is still detecting power coming from the port that it's plugged into.

I have another wireless mouse that I use occasionally and both it and my WIRED mouse are getting power, just no input. The only thing that isn't getting power is my keyboard.

I have a feeling it's a hardware issue, but I really dunno where to start. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.Check your device manager for conflicts...

Start > Control Panel > Device Manger

Under...

Keyboard
Mouse and other pointing devices
Universal Serial Bus controllers

This will inform you if the device is working, conflicting with something else or disabled, etc.
If it has a cross or question mark against anything, thats a bad sign and should be checked.
You can also re-install or update the drivers from there and scan for hardware changes by right-clicking the device in the list.

Of course you can navigate with just the mouse or just the keyboard but not having either might be a problem..
If you have PS2 connections, use them while checking, if just for temporary. Quote from: Azzaboi on March 02, 2010, 08:46:37 PM

Well, this sounds more like a hardware issue of some kind, since it doesn't work even to display the BIOS screens. Also, if you think really hard about it (heh) it might be hard to follow those steps without a keyboard or mouse!

I have to second the PS/2 idea- if a PS/2 mouse/keyboard works, then at least you're back in business to use your PC, and then you can examine device manager as Azzaboi has outlined.

It sounds like a problem relating to USB in general- once your able to access device manager (using PS/2 devices) you can use it to uninstall all USB "host controller" items as well as all USB "hub" devices, and then reboot. keep using the PS/2 devices for a while here- since Windows will not perform the plug and play steps to install the "new" USB hubs and so forth until after you log on. Then you can try plugging in your USB mouse and keyboard.

If you don't have PS/2 ports on your PC, well, I really don't know what you can do! You might even need a fresh install of windows, if that's the case. Thanks guys, I have PS/2 ports, just not a mouse or keyboard. I'll have to go out and get those tomorrow or something.
If you are, indeed, experiencing hardware failure that's causing the problem with USB devices, an add-on PCI USB card could be a solution.  Here's one: Rosewill NEC 4+1 Port USB2.0 PCI CARD Model RC-101 - Retail Just an update, the computer now provides power to the keyboard as well.Sorry I need another recommendation. The only specialty computer shop where I go to school is a bit of a trek for me, so I really don't wanna make the effort to go there if I don't have to.

There's a Best Buy that's closer. Of course they don't sell PS/2 mice or keyboards, but they do sell ones that come with USB to PS/2 adapters. Would it be better to get an actual PS/2 keyboard or can I just get the adapter?

EDIT: Sorry about the double postOne USB to PS/2 adapter should be fine. Check the boxes, they normally come with the keyboard and/or mouse rather than buying something you might not even need. Also you could op to borrow a ps/2 keyboard and/or mouse from somewhere and return it.

You can get away with just using one device, if necessary. The keyboard (quicker so long you know the quick windows key) else the mouse.

What's your PSU (power suppy) voltage/watts and do you have any power hungry devices such as a lastest graphics card? It might be not enough to go around.I built this in the summer, and unless I didn't read something my PSU is fine. It's a Corsair 750TX 750 W. Feeds a GTX260 OC, an Audigy 4, Q9550 at 3.4 GHz.

I know I have an adapter that came with some parts, but the problem is I'm currently at school in a dorm and all that stuff is at home. I've been trying to find a PS/2 keyboard or mouse all day, but no one around here has any.Any Staples store in the area?  They have this PS/2 keyboard: Microsoft Wired Keyboard 500.  Note the layout for Home, End, Pg Up, Pg Down, Insert, and Delete keys.  If you're not used to that, you might find it a little frustrating right at first. There is a Staples in close proximity, but the thing is I'm in Canada and they don't carry that one in stock here. Thanks for the SUGGESTION though.Well, you could order from tigerdirect.ca.  PS 2 keyboardsI would think that in a school environment somewhere there there should be some PS2 mice and keyboards. Use your charm to persuade someone to let you borrow them to test the theory and see if they allow you to use the computer before you start buying things.truenorthI'm in Canada and I'm using a Wired 500 at this moment.

Also, guess where I bought it?

Staples.

This was some time ago, though. They don't carry the Wired 500 at Staples, says so online. As well I went to the store today and didn't see it there. I did however, get a PCI USB card and can now get into Windows. I'm going to wait on a PS/2 adapter until next week because my friend can get one from home.

Anyway, after a driver update I managed to get my onboard network card up again(had a PCI one before). USB ports are still all shot, but I'm gonna keep trying to get them back. If not there's always RMA or just a new mobo. Thanks to everyone who replied, and if anyone still has any suggestions as to how, or even if, I could get those back I'm all ears. Thanks again.
