Solve : Old computer problem?

Answer»

Hi,
I have been fixing (breaking) an old computer belonging to my parents.
It is a Shuttle barebones built system, running an Athlon XP 2800+. For some reason the PROCESSOR was running at half speed (according to Windows - about 1.25 ghz if I remember CORRECTLY) I am unsure of how long it had been like this for; I am sure that it wasn't like this when it was first set up with current OS. So I went into BIOS, saw that FSB was set to 100mhz. After a quick bit of research I learned that this is not an uncommon PROBLEM, and that with the xp2800 FSB should be set to 166mhz. OK...
I changed this an booted the system. It booted successfully, but after a couple of minutes using windows it shut down; next try was similar. After that it just wouldn't BOOT anymore. It hangs on the white loading bar before the Windows splash, when booted in safe mode it also hangs on one particular file.
I will have more details - such as the name of the file, and the motherboard number - when I next have the computer in front of me.
Until then does anyone have any ideas what I may be up against here. I have been using Shuttles for a while. The model number would be good to know. SK43G? SN43G?

Have you accessed the BIOS SETTINGS again and tried a different FSB speed setting? If it's an SK43G try running the FSB at 133.
Thanks for the speedy reply guys. I am glad there are some other shuttle users on this board. I believe it is SN41G (two small round buttons) but I will wait to see it again before I confirm that.
One important thing I forgot to say is that after it stopped booting I put the fsb back to 100 but it made no difference.
