Solve : Old game doesn't recognise graphics card?

Answer»

Old game I am trying to play is Wheel of TIME Video game from 1999.

The game wont recognise my graphics card and only setting that is playable is SOFTWARE rendering. With that graphics are so bad that game is hardly playable.
If I try to start the game with any other setting that Software rendering it crashes on start giving error about not finding graphics card.

Is there any way I could make it recognise my graphics card and get (somewhat) better graphics?

I tried using compatibility modes (Win 95&98) but those didn't help.

My graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460.
OS is Windows 7 pro 64 bit.

My old computer which had Geforce G6500 could run this game without problems.

"software rendering" probably means it is pushing all the work to the CPU...

the grammar in the above link is terrible, but it is on the right track of simulating an older graphics card with 3DAnalyze... I'll see if I can get more info on simulating graphics cards...Many games have aftermarket patches to resolve issues with them involving their (utterly stupid IMO) support for only very specific chipsets. Games that fall into this category (RIDICULOUS 3-D support constraints as WELL as aftermarket patches to fix that stupidity) usually have patches that apply either to the game executable itself, to the "3d Device setup" program (and/or it's database file) or both.

A quick search using a query to this end gave me this page, which lists several patches, including one listed as a "Direct3d patch" which may be helpful.

I cannot install those patches, they wont install because they wont detect the game. ("Please install game before installing this patch.")
Game's install CD has been lost for years so I have been moving the game from computer to computer simply by copying the game folder. So I am not very surprised that patches wont detect it.
I tried opening patches in game folder but didn't help.

I also tried 3d Analyser, so far it didn't help either. I'll keep experimenting with its many options when I have more time.
Any idea which options I should use?

And these all options the game gives me for graphics:
3dfx Glide for Windows - Works, same low graphics as software rendering, complaints missing Dll while starting.
Direct3d support - Game crashes
OpenGL support - Game crashes
S3 Metal for Windows - Works, same low graphics, complaints missing Dll while starting.
Software rendering - Works, low graphicsYou need to purchase the game if you want it to run properly...I know the game files are fine because on other computers it works without any problem.
After so many years it would be hard to find this game on sale, and even I found it I wouldn't buy game that already own.Quote from: Madoc Comadrin on August 22, 2011, 03:22:40 AM

If you lost the disc, you no longer own the game, really.Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 22, 2011, 09:29:02 AM

I still possess those bits that make up the game.

I managed to install that 3d patch but it didn't help. (I found out that default location for game was C:/Wheel of Time not C:/Program files so moving game to default folder allowed INSTALLATION.)
But it didn't help, game still crashes like before.

Any other ideas what might help?
