Solve : Old HDD file recovery?

Answer»

Old computer stopped working quickly a while back and I bought a new one. New computer is running XP and the old box is running 98. Have hooked up the old HDD and it says it will not run the disc due to the differences in OS. Is there anyway around this or are all the old files gone.Shouldn't see that error message at all...http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/How are you trying to access the drive? You still need to boot to your current OS.It is connected through a slave IDE connection. The main disc thats running XP is still connected.
Here is the actual error message that comes up.

Checking File system on E:
The type of the file system is FAT32

One of your discs needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disc check, but it is strongly recommend
that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.
Volume serial NUMBER is 1B4A-0EFA
The specified disk appears to be a non-windows xp disk.
Do you WANT to continue (Y/N) No
Error in writing the output log.
.......

That is what comes up when i try to boot. It is as far as I can get with the drive connected.Quote from: Lumpy44 on June 20, 2011, 05:08:02 PM

Do you want to continue (Y/N) YWould love to have the option. GIVES me no time to hit it (seems super weird). Sorry, I thought it was pausing at that point (which it usually does), so you can ANSWER the question.
Try booting into Safe Mode & then running CHKDSK /F on the Win98 volume.Hi

The drive is probley double_spaced or using some data protection system. You need to boot from the drive itself to load the supporting software to access that data. Not use it as a slave on the windows XP drive.
