Solve : Older HP ProLiant Servers: Ram Upgrades?

Answer»

Ok, so i have several old G1 ProLiant servers that take the PC133R type memory. I remember reading somewhere that you should use only HP branded ram in the servers. Now, before i go about on ebay finding some ram and taking these servers OFFLINE, is the HP branded ram a requirement to boot the SERVER, or is it just suggested by HP?

My systems are:
2X HP Proliant DL 580 G1 (One currently at about 8G ram (16X512), The other at only 1(8x128))
4X HP Proliant DL 360 G1 (Three at 0.5G (4X128) and one at 1G (4X256))

They currently run Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS

I also have a few other servers, and am wondering if those can also become upgraded at some point. Thanks. Anyone telling you it has to be HP RAM is fulll of Bull...

HP doesn't even make RAM.Well, what i was meaning is with their logo on it, not that they made it.

All the ram i have pulled from a few servers has had the Compaq logo on a sticker placed on it, and that in combination of reading this somewhere has me curious.

ThanksGood evening zeroburn and welcome back

What patio is telling is 100% correct.

I know what you are talking about.

PC133r is registered. From past experience older servers that take PC133 ecc / r memory must be done in matched pairs and some of them back then had instruction sets in the chip that is why they were so finicky.

HP only says that so you would buy the parts from them.

I can not really remember but some of the older DL servers took PC 100 also but be careful older server memory people will PUT the ** to you as far as price.

If you want new memory just go to crucial and use there configuration tool for the part numbers or go to kingston and do the same thing. I would check there web sites and believe what they say over rumors.

Hope this helps, Mike       Just anting to be sure before i do anything. Thanks. Registered RAM is hard to find.  Good Luck!We had an old HP ProLiant ML350 G2 PIII 1.2GHz/1 GB RAM Server and we ended up USING EDGE Memory from PC Connection with no troubles. I'd go with new Ram vs used from ebay.  Not hard to find, still available. We got our Ram upgrade in about 3 weeks from PC connection 2 years ago, they had to special order it as they dont stock older Ram. http://www.pcconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Product/Detail.htm?sku=266625
