Solve : Optical Drives not working?

Answer»

I have just installed a DVD writer in my computer. i plugged all the cables in (molex and ide) and didnt touch anything else. I turned my computer back on and the existing cd writer and the new dvd writer do not work. the cdrw is on the master, and the dvdrw is on the slave connection. Help me please!!!!!
The drives are also not showing up in device manager EITHER and it briefly said something about 'Code 45'

Bios is as follows:

First Channel Device 0 - [ST340015A] (CDRW)
First Channel Device 1 - [None]
Second Channel Device 0 - [ASUS DRW-0000] (DVDRW)
Second Channel Device 1 - [NONE]
Third Channel Device 0 - [NONE]
Fourth Channel Device 0 - [NONE]

First Channel Device 0:
Cylinder - 19158
Head - 16
Precomp - 0
Landing Zone - 19157
Sector - 255
S.M.A.R.T Status - Enabled
UDMA - 5

Second Channel Device 0:
Cylinder - 0
Head - 0
Precomp - 0
Landing Zone - 0
Sector - 0
S.M.A.R.T Status - Disabled
UDMA - 2
I can't say for sure, but some drives just don't like being a slave drive and can sometimes foul both drives.  Try the following:

- new DVDRW by itself as master.  Disconnect the old CDRW drive.  Does it work?  No, the new drive is BAD or the settings are wrong.  Why is S.M.A.R.T. disabled?

- if it works, add the CDRW to the same controller (same cable) as a slave.  Do they work? Done.

- if they don't, then something is wrong with the combination, connections or settings.  Make sure you try other cables and check for bent pins.  Try CS (cable select) settings if your controller supports it.

DellI'm getting my mate to have a look at it tomorrow and i'll get back to you with the result. I guess I'll just have to watch cable tv or go to the gym instead of playing source

RhysHow you enable SMART and USE Cable Select?

RhysFirst of all the REVISIONS you made in your BIOS list that you posted are incorrect...
First Channel Device 0 = is not a CDRW it's a Seagate HDD...

S.M.A.R.T is already enabled for the HDD, so there is no reason to change it.

The jumpers on the DVD burner are in between the power connector and the IDE connector...set this to Master and plug it in to the end of the IDE cable on IDE2 and you should be good to go...

patio.

p.s. S.M.A.R.T. does nothing on optical drives so don't enable it on IDE2...Hi
Thanks for the info. My friend at school told me that I might have the jumper on the DVDRW in the wrong place, so I got home and looked and 'what-do-ya-know' , it's in the wrong place. I changed it to CS and all is working fine.
Add note: Is there any way to change the letter of a drive, as I have always wanted a Z:\ since my first computer.

RhysFrom left to right, connections on the DVD drive were Audio, Jumper thingy, IDE, Molexyou should see a white slot and things label MA SA SI Master, Slave, Single. What is your current setup?

Example:

Primary Master:
Primary Slave:
Secondary Master:
Secondary Slave:

Fill it in those order pease.I changed the jumper on the back of the DVD Drive to slave and all was fine. it was on master originally
