my dvdrw/cdrw and my cdrw/dvdrom drives stopped being able to record they get over half way or to 99% then they stop saying that it could not complete the burn. i have reinstalled the drivers, tried cdr's, cdrw's, and dvdr in both drives. none work. i have tried music, and photographs also just some data. all the same. i can still play games and watch movies, just not burn. i have tried drag and drop burning, and nero all with the same results. i dont know what to do.

i am running a gateway 7200x, 3.4gz, 1gig ram, 128 mb ati graphics, xp home w/sp2. has anyone had this problem before or know of a solution. thanks

tmmldid you try to reinstall your burning softwarei have tried nero, Media player, burn to disk, and just regular burning. nothing completes. i dont think that its a SOFTWARE problem, but i may be mistaken.What's running in the background?
Are the drives PROPERLY connected?
Are they in PIO mode?
Are you virus/malware free?i have webroot spy sweeper, norton anitvi06, micosoft antispyware, adware, and spybot. webroot, norton, are on startup. the others i run about twice a week. I have checked the connections twice and cleaned the drives.

tmmlPIO = Programmed I/O which is a very basic method of data transfer over the IDE/ATA INTERFACE. Windows often defaults to this mode when problems arise. You can check this by OPENING Device Manager and selecting your secondary IDE controller. Right click, select Properties>Advanced.

If, as is highly likely, the two burners are on the same channel, a hardware fault in one can be reproduced in the other. Disconnect one at a time (Remove power and data cables) and try the other.did like you said here i what i got.

tmmlWhat's the exact error message you get each time? I did see where someone posted that when windows tries to autoplay at the end of burning, it stops the process... but I doubt thats whats happening here...sorry for the delay,

the error message is "could not complete writting project"
