Solve : OS artifacts, locks after hours of on time?

Answer»

Ive been having this issue for about 2 months now. If I leave my computer on for more than about 5 hours, the operating system seems to stop functioning properly. I start getting lots of graphics artifacts in Windows like missing text colors, bars, in the GUI. I try to click on buttons, links or OPEN a browser and its either frozen or extremely slow. About all I can do is a CTRL-ALT-DELETE and attempt to RESTART, but even that doesn't work sometimes and I must do a hard reboot. It reboots and everything is perfectly fine again. I can put the computer into STANDBY mode when I'm not at the computer and this will extend the time before I need a reboot. The computer does not automatically go into sleep mode OR hibernate. It only goes to screen SAVER after 15 minutes.

I re-formatted my OS drive and reinstalled all my programs and it still does it. I tried turning off programs running in background and it still does it. I'm coming to the conclusion its possibly a memory issue, video memory issue, or something I am installing that is causing this. It doesn't seem to matter what programs i have been or are currently running.

I have RUN Memtest and found no errors. I'm not sure what else to do at this point. Could it be video memory problem? How can I check this?

Computer is homebuilt 9/2007:

Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Mobo
E6750 Core2Duo 2.3GHz
corsair 2GB RAM
360GB HD ( 40% used)
Nvidia 8800GT 320MB

Windows XP SP3
AVG AntivirusWelcome to CH,

How is your housekeeping on the inside of the case.....been cleaned in the past TWO years?

Download Speedfan and check your temps.

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.phpI cleaned out the computer probably 4 months ago, dust wasn't beyond normal accumulation.

I DL'd Speedfan and here is what showing ( note: computer has been on all day and, surprisingly, seems to be functioning still)

CPU usage 0.6%
GPU 56C
Temp1 45C
Temp 2 34C
Temp 3 -2C
HD0 35C
Core0 32C
Core1 32C
Core 56C
Ambient 0C

The GPU and Core are at 56C, is that high? I have not OC'd this board.

Voltages read:

Vcore1 1.15V
Vcore2 1.90V
3.3V 3.26V
5V 4.89V
12V 0.64V
-12V -16.97
-5V 4.91V
5V 5.16
Vbat 3.28V

the + 12 and -12 don't seem right? After further investigation, I found that the GPU and Core temperatures are both pulled form the Graphics Card. This seems unusually high to me, i probably should open the box and check the fan, unless you think these are normal temps.
