Solve : PC shows removeable disks that are not there?

Answer»

Hello all- I was given another pc. The operating system is XP. The system info.shows removable disk F,Removeabledisk G,thru I. There are no usb drives pluged in. Safely remove hardware Icon shows up. When I click on this they can be REMOVED. After I reboot, PC shows These 4 removable drives again. How do I remove these icons? Why are they showing when nothing is pluged into a usb port? Thanks. That is a built in card reader i would bet my bottom dollar...I believe that I am looking at a card reader installed on the front panel. the slots are marked CF/MMC  CF/MD   SD/MMC  SM. I don't know what they stand for. I will do some research. Why does the safely remove hardware icon show? I guess I have nothing to worry about. Thanks a bunch.Anytime...that's why they re-appear on re-boot...even after removing them...

Not to worry.

BTW those are the 4 most popular SC Card formats and they all need their own device to work.SD ^^^Just to confirm what Patio has said, those are indeed the card reader slots that you're seeing. My old card reader used to do that, and I've seen it in many other COMPUTERS. My new card reader doesn't show them unless there's a card in one, but that's just because that's how it's made.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's perfectly normal and performing EXACTLY how it was designed. But I will add something for future reference. If you do put a card in the slot, instead of using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature before you remove the card, instead just right click the drive icon in My Computer and SELECT "Eject". This will dismount the card (if it's not in use) and allow you to remove it without have to restart to get the card reader working again. If you don't want the drive letters to show if no card is inserted, use this utility:  http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.htmlThank you all again. Now if I only had some cards to read. We can send you some if you like...
