Solve : plays .mp3 cd but not music cd?

Answer»

Here is my setup:XP, Windows Media Player, Sony CD-RW 215E5, RealTek AC'97 sound on motherboard
I have tried numerous different music cds. It won't play play any music cd. When I click on E:(the drive letter of my cd drive), it says something like "cannot ACCESS". Yet I put a cd with .mp3 music files on it in the same drive, they play. By the way, a substituted known-good 215E5 acts the same way. Can the RealTek AC'97 cause this? Ideas? Things to try? What HAPPENED before this started?
Do they play in any media player?Yes, all music cds used to play in this system and now play in another system. Have you ever heard of a bad RealTek AC'97 causing this? I guess I need to disable AC'97 in BIOS and plug in a known good sound card. Also, a different IDE cable. I don't know what else to try.

Look in media players options for the FILE TYPES that it automatically takes control of. If you have installed or recently used another player software, it may have taken control. You own 2 identical CD drives ? ?

Interesting. I would try 2 things....re-install the Realtek drivers and DLoad and install another media player to see if that is the issue...

VLC is good AND free.I should have THOUGHT of this. I learned something new. You can right click on the .cda music file, click "open with". XP will give you a choice of all the installed music player programs. Then you don't have to mess with which one is currently "default". I know some music players switch "default" to themselves without asking!
