I recently installed Windows Vista on my computer, and I want to get rid of it and get XP back. I have tried everything such as FORMATTING the disk drive, trying to enter BIOS setup, trying to boot from my Windows XP disk, and nothing works. I tried all the buttons to attempt to enter the BIOS setup such as F2 and everything I even looked up on here how to do it and I tried everything and mostly I got nothing or it just got stuck at a black screen forever to where I would have to restart the computer. I really need to figure out how to be able to boot my computer from my CD drive and I'm completely stuck, since everything I tried failed.[By the way I tested to make sure the CD worked and it did, it just won't let me run it from start up, I'm also positive my CD drives are fine.] I apologize if this seems like a stupid question but I really need help. My computer is a Dell Dimension 4550 if that helps at all.Okay. We need to try alot of thing on this. Please keep posting as to what is happening.
FIRSTLY, restart the computer and hit F12 when you see the Dell logo. Select one time boot menu and change the boot device to CD/DVD drive and then insert the CD and try BOOTING. Let me KNOW fast. I did that, and nothing.  Quote from: clw1990 on March 24, 2009, 11:56:15 AM

What is the state of the pc right now? You mentioned that you have formatted the hard drive, is there an operating system on it now?I meant to put I attempted to format it sorry. No problem, so Vista is still your current OS at this time? If that is the case, I would check add/remove programs and see if Windows Vista is listed in there. If Vista is anything like Windows XP, you should have the OPTION to un-install Vista which would then bring you back to your previous OS. Yeah it's my current OS. It's not on the add/remove programs list.
Does windows detect that the vista cd is in the cd-rom drive? Quote
trying to boot from my Windows XP disk

we need to explore this option more thoroughly. What exactly happens when you attempt to boot from the XP disc? It should display "press any key to boot from CD..." at which point you should- press any key.

I'm not sure if it's detecting it, I know the CD and the CD drives are fine though.. but it doesn't say "Press any key to boot from CD" when I start it up.  Quote from: skotto on March 24, 2009, 02:07:14 PM

Why would Vista be listed in Add/Remove Programs ? ?    If memory serves me correctly, it was at some point listed in add/remove programs so that the end user could revert back to their previous OS.  I remember this being a feature when XP first launched. Microsoft may have since removed this.
