Solve : possible dvd failure?

The DVD reader/burner on my PC no no longr recognises cd's in any form, IE music cd, data cd or blank cd for me to write. Please can someone confirm that its dead and not a software issue before I splash some cash on a new one

What diagnostics have you tried?

Try booting off a DOS disc and going to the root of the optical drive that contains a cd and then use the DIR command.

If you get 'not ready reading drive x' it's no longer of this world. If it lists FILES then it's software related.Remove your DVD device from the Device Manager.
(Right click my computer->Manage->Device Manager.

Restart PC.
Next logon windows will redetect the device.

keep in MIND that Windows XP users can lock a device in use if they have switched between users.
