Solve : power on 2nd pc over network??

Answer»

this might be a stupid question haha sorry if it is

im using a laptop in my bedroom which is connected to a desktop pc downstairs via straight thru ethernet cable. i often access files from the desktop with my laptop, but when the pc is off, i have to GO downstairs, turn it on then turn it off when im done. Is their a way of turning the desktop pc on and off using my laptop!! thanxIf this was ever integrated into any software, to turn on and off a computer remotely, it whould be a highe security problem, you can imagine. there is a lot of security in knowing that your computer is off and nothing can touch it. if someone set this up it would be a matter of hacking into a wireless connection and controlling a computer completely. so i don't think there is a way, for security's sake.
PS. you could ACTUALLY walk down stairs and turn it on There is no way to turn on ur PC using an ethernet connection, but u may be able to find an alternative method of turning ur PC on.. for instense maybe a long stick? Thats a brush idea but u can make some sort of device that will turn it on with the PUSH of a button or somewhat if u put ur mind to it.
Why close ur PC anyway? u can have the monitor turned off to save power if ur worried abt a costly bill.Check the desktops BIOS and see if you have the option to set it to "wake on lan". Then instead of shutting down completely, put it in sleep MODE. Also set the desktop to sleep after a specific period of inactivity.lol after a thew months of going downstairs to turn it on and off you would understand how anoying it is!

i have been leaving it in standby alot, turning the monitor off but i understand this still TAKES up quite a bit of power?PC in standby probably uses no more than 15 watts. That's less than a nickel's worth of electricity a day.

Wake on LAN is fine for this purpose. Presumably you have already installed TightVNC or RealVNC for true remote control. No? i can still access files from the hardrive when its in standby. its all i wanna do really

i was just worried that it takes up alot of tricity
