Solve : Power On Self Test?

Answer»

I put together my first barebones kit and can't get the POST going when I turn the power on.  My monitor light stays orange and I just hear a series of beeps coming from the system.  I would like to know if one of the components are damaged so that I can return it before the time expires.

Thanks! What kind of system did you build, and what operating system are you using?

You might CHECK to see if the RAM "sticks" are properly installed, and seated properly.  (One way to test is to remove the RAM, start the system and see what happens.

Also, the wires that run from the front of the COMPUTER -- are they properly installed on the pins on the system BOARD?

When you turn on the power, do the fans in the power supply and on the board work? The beeps themselves will offer a clue as well...care to be more specific ? ?First let me say thanks for the replies.  I'm pretty new at this and felt lost.  Well, I was all set to start over, so I began by taking out the memory to see what happens when I turn the power on.  I received the same exact beeps as before, so I seated it again using as much force as I dared.  Thankfully, when I powered up this time, I got the POST test and was able to get into the CMOS Setup.  My next step is to install the OS; I have XP, which I hear a lot of people prefer over Vista.  I bought the following barebones bundle from TigerDirect: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4196649&Sku=M452-2845 C.

Hopefully it'll be smooth sailing from this point on, but I'm glad to know there are people out there who are willing to lend a helping hand in case I run into problems.

Thanks again for your help; I really appreciate it!
P.S. I was getting two very quick beeps and FIVE consecutive beeps at a slower rate. We're here if needed...
