Solve : power supply and voltage problems?

Answer»

I recently relocated from the US to Bulgaria. My laptop is working fine with a voltage converter. I purchased a special step up-step down voltage converter/regulator for my Dell Dimension 4600 desktop. These did not seem to working quite right. so I used the same converter for my desktop that I use to plug in my laptop and I think I fried the Dell. I did not know there was voltage flip switch until after wards. I am ASSUMING my power SUPPLY is fried at this point as there was a huge spark when I attempted to plug it in. Will this affect the rest of the components in the computer or only the power supply? I am assuming that if the rest of the components are OK then I could just replace the power supply with correct plug/voltage here. I am afraid to do any more damage and did not want to risk trying again with voltage FLIPPED. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, NicI think you over LOADED it. You said there was a spark usually that means you kill the computer not the power supply. YOu can take it to have it looked at but its probably going to cost less if you got a new computer. Quote

Where did you see the spark? At the back of the computer where you connect the power cord?

I believe the only WAY to determine, for sure, the extent of the damage is to do some testing or take it to a shop for testing, and I think the latter is the safer option here.
