Solve : Printing - horizontal banding when using black ink?

Answer»

I have an EPSON Stylus CX3600 and for a little while now (since Christmas?), every time I try to use black ink only, horizontal BANDING is evident and so the printout is unusable. When I print in colour, things appear fine, but I don't want to print in colour all the time because the majority of my printouts are purely black and white. I have tried using different paper and changing the black ink cartridge, both to no avail. Previous to that, I have run numerous nozzle checks and print head alignments but neither of these have changed the situation. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this banding problem, as I really NEED the use of my printer quite REGULARLY and it is getting very annoying! I do not use original EPSON ink cartridges, but I don't think this is the problem because I rarely use them and never usually get this problem. :-?Quote

You have answered your own problem...Patio is right, there is risk INVOLVED with using aftermarket ink.
Some's good and some's junk.
Epson uses a piezo system to disperse and the ink has to be specific to Epson and to your specific Epson model.
The good generics know this and the cheapos try to use a universal formulation.
I would get take generic CART out and try the cleaning regimen again with an Epson cart.

If that doesn't work try a cleaning cartridge (black) made for your machine.
They are hard to find and after a quick Google I see that your model makes it even tougher. Lots of hits in the UK.
Here's an example :

You'll just have to search around if you want to try one.
A mfr called G&G makes cleaning cartridges if you can find a dealer.
Maybe PrintPal can come up with one, they're a G&G dealer.

Anyway, take out your black cart and install the cleaning cart.
Do the cleaning regimen with the Epson utility 4-5 times.
Try the normal cart again.
If nada, repeat the cleaning regimen again with the cleaning cart and this time let it sit for 12 hours (with the cleaning cart still installed and the printer unplugged)
Retry.
If nada, post back. There are at least two more levels of Epson printhead recovery tricks we can try.
