Solve : Problem with system recovery?

Answer»

Issue: Computer won't boot to windows.

Action: While downloading from Limewire, I left the computer on and went to bed, woke up the next morning, and the comp was off. Tryed to restart, nothing. Tryed system recovery(With disks provided by manufacturer) no good. Said it couldn't reconize C: drive. I was lost. A friend checked it out, said hard drive was shot (80GB 5400 speed SATA). So I replaced the hard drive (120GB 5400 speed SATA), tryed restore disks again, everything went great until the reboot( "remove all disks, press any key"). Now the SCREEN comes up and there is just a curser in the upper left hand corner. I cant do anything. No F1's, nothing works. So I repeated the restore, same deal. What is going on? How do I fix?Quote

everything went great
You mean, Windows got reinstalled?Yes Windows. It went "normal." Looked like it was installing correctly. The message...wasn't it rather Invalid system disk, replace disk and press any key?Nope, "Remove all disks and press any key" I have unfortunatly had to restore the laptop many times because of my stupidity. So this process was FAMILIAR to me. Normally after this action, I remove the disk, and the system reboots, and then I go through the process of setting up my XP ( USERS, passwords, computer NAME, register products, etc.) This time, it went bad for me, and I get the blank screen with the blinking curser in the upper left hand corner, thats it. It doesn't continue like it did in the past. What is BIOS boot sequence set to?See, thats where i am dumb. I was thinking that is my problem, but I'm not sure how to check all that, and my laptop is not here with me to check. Could you tell me how to check it? What the sequence should be? and any other possible solutions? I understand that it is hard for you to understand the problem when I am so ignorant on this stuff. But I'm learning. Any way, any help is appreciated. I just remembered also, that when I do get to the DOS prompt (by other means) The prompt is "A:\" I try to switch to "C:" and that is also a no go. The only other drive it goes to is "Q". Yeah, no clue what that means. Hopefully it gives you another avenue to look at.We're gonna need some more help from hardware guys, but meanwhile...

It depends on your motherboard, but when your computer starts, at the bottom of the screen, it should briefly display something like:
Press some key to enter Setup

The sequence, normally should be:
floppy drive
CD drive
Hard drive

How?Thank you. I'll check back later.I get to the prompt by cancelling the restore process. When it ask me if I want to continue( with the complete wipe out of my hard drive) I just select "N" and it gives me "A:\" Then I can do other CRAP. But that is where i can't get to my C: drive. It says something like "Invalid Drive Destination" or something like that.Quote

You want to say Yes.Normally I do. I just go that way to get to the prompt. Because it works. When I do press yes, it goes through and loads from the disk, goes through the whole process of taking everything from the disk, and to me, everything is normal at that point. Its when it restarts, it doesn't go anywhere else, I got nothin'. That is my problem. Its pretty frustrating.........Did you remove CD from the CD drive?Fantastic. It was the boot order. It was booting HDD-FDD-CD-ROM. So I switched it, and now it works great. Thanks Broni for your help.

Sure thing
