Solve : RAID or not to RAID, that is the question.?

Answer»

Hi Guys,

Some of you might know ONE of my SATA HDD's died. Unfortunatley, it was the one with the data.
Anywho, I was wondering what is the best solution regarding data storage and  backup. I was thinking of a NAS or a RAID.
Don't know much about RAID and have worked with a few NAS's in the past. The RAID option sounds like a good project to take on, as I have a few spare machine COLLECTING dust and it would be good to build a storgae machine. Or should I go down the NAS path and just buy a QNAP or somehting like that.

Thoughts?

CHEERS,
IvanRAID-1 is good for a machine that must be up and running 24/7.  It's not intended for data backup.  NAS is an acceptable backup solution.  It depends on how much data you have & how accessible you want it to be from more than one computer or location.  I use multiple backup media for data, i.e. internal &external hard drive, internal & external card reader with SDHC card.  Also image BACKUPS of the entire boot partition to external USB drives.I personally think having a regular backup regimen imaging your HDD's to a seperate partition and then burning them say once a Month for solid backups would be a much more cost-effective solution... ... should I go down the NAS
Yes.
Follow the broad road of NAS.
