Solve : Random Computer Start Ups and Shut Downs?

Answer»

I have an old Compaq Presario with a 2.6ghz Celeron PROCESSOR, 768MB RAM running Windows XP SP2. Just recently the computer starts up and shuts down randomly. Sometimes the machine will start up (lights and all) for about less than 5 seconds and then powers down. Sometimes it will go all the way to the boot screen and then all of a sudden power off. Sometimes it will enter Windows and then will immediately go through a normal shut down. After this it will tend to start up again, and shut down at different times by itself in a cycle. The power button really doesn't have much of an effect, sometimes it will do something, sometimes it won't. I'm unable to do much of anything with it like this.

UPDATE: I just changed the CMOS battery and reseated the RAM, the computer at least now boots up correctly into Windows. However, given a long period of time, it still sometimes will normally shut down without notice and restart. I don't know the cause of this issue? Is it some virus or spyware? (I'm going to run some scans to check.) Any ideas?

Processor Model: Intel Celeron
Core 1: 2,600.00 mhz (no temperature reading)

Through PC Wizard though, I was ABLE to get a reading of 35 degrees Celsius.Try memtest: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.htmlWell the problems have come back after a few weeks of no issues. Basically the machine will randomly power up, sometimes gets to Windows, sometimes times, and then power off. If it does get to Windows, it will shut down normally by itself, so no abrupt power off. Sometimes it will power up not even to the BIOS, then power off, and then power on in a cycle. I have no idea what is going on.

Memtest will not run all the way before the machine powers off.If machine powers off, when booted from CD/floppy, you may have power supply problem.
