Solve : random shut downs?

Answer»

i recently just got a sound card, tried to install it, and it didnt work. i took the card out, and it was still shutting down randomly. i tried a different pci slot, but its the same results. i was told that it might be my ram, so i used 1 stick at a time, then both together, but same results.

what i know happend is that i forgot to disable/uninstall my onboard sound the first time i tried to put my card in. i then disabled it, and tried my card again but just did the same thing. i can get to my desktop but after a few SECONDS it just shuts down, i can't even get into safe mode, let a lone have ENOUGH time to do a SYSTEM restore before it shuts down.

specs:

intel c2d e6750
asus p5k-vm
8800gt evga
2 gb ballistix ram
x fi xtreme gamer card (not installed right now)
650w psu
xp pro sp3

plz help Sorry if this is a stupid question but you didn't mention it.
Did you try putting the old card back in and trying it?

Anything else before the problem? (downloads, installs)Did your new card come with a CD?
You may just need to run it.Quote from: JJ 3000 on August 26, 2008, 03:26:56 AM

He can't get into Windows though.....Try to enable your onboard sound in setup. Take the card out and see if it still shuts down.i found the problem. while i was installing. 2 pins for my heatsink some how broke and unlatched them selves, overheating my PC. now i have to get a new heat sink

well actually i dont really have to, but i want to, just because the intel heat sink that came with my e6750 is WAY too much hastle and i don't want something like this happening again and cause far WORSE damage.

so i guess my real question now is which is a good heat sink? i don't want anything fancy, just something thats easy to install and gets the job done. i have a small case because i go to lan parties every so often, so i can't really use anything big either. heres how much space i have:

and like i said i have an intel e6750 c2d. maybe there are good heatsinks at my local microcenter?
