Solve : reading drive on laptop?

Answer»

My laptop has died and I've decided not to fix it. It is not the hard drive, but some other card. Anyway, I was wondering if I could take the hard drive and hook it up to another computer in order to get some items off the drive?

If I can do this, how do I do it?

thanks
Judy
Welcome to the CH forums Judy.

You can hook up your laptop hard drive to a desktop IDE connector using the adapter you will see here. Cost is about ten dollars.

Good luckJust want to confirm that this is the only way to do it?

I do not have access to a desktop that I can open up to install anything. I was hoping there may be a "sleeve" or something that I could insert the hard drive itself into and then plug into another computer, either desk or laptop.

Anything like that? Or am I just out of luck?

thanks in advance.

Possible example to read about:

Then look around there some more, for others. That was just the first one I came to.

Wait for Dusty, or someone else with experience with them before you spend your MONEY. I just saw that it had been a while SINCE you'd gotten a response and wanted to give you something to think about.

The first SUGGESTION is the best...i have had bad times with data recovery using USB ports but if that's the only alternative go for it...
You don't know anyone else with a desktop system ? ?
It takes about 10 minutes tops to hook it up using the first method...
