Solve : Ready for smart guns??

Answer»

Not really news. So that is why it is in Off Topic.

The media is again drawing attention to a technology that already exists. But why is it not used. Does it not work?
A 'Smart Gun' can only be fired by its owner. An **RFID device couples to a chip in the gun and sets the trigger.

CBS is airing a program on Nov. 1 about the 'Smart Guns'

Smart Guns: CBS

Quote

Every time there's a massacre at a school, like the recent one in Oregon, it reignites the debate for more gun control -- not only because of the mass shootings, but because of the hundreds of incidents of gun violence every day on our streets and in our homes. One idea that keeps coming up is smart guns. These are firearms that only work when they're fired by their owner. It seems that "gee whiz" technology is seeping into every corner of our lives. Why not guns?
The link above has a video.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio-frequency_identificationSmart guns have sort of been around for a while... its really more like a user authentication system vs smart. As for you wont be bringing it up to your ear and calling people on your 9mm Ruger. They have had finger print and grip based authentication for a while now. Problem is that its like a guy at work I was talking with the one day who has his gun in a wall safe. If you need it for a home intrusion, seconds count and so you dont want to be having to remember a combination etc, and then load it.

I have some guns and they are ready AVAILABLE if needed for home defense without access codes or having to worry about my RFID key to be on me to use it. Guns I have are not just grab and pull trigger, semi AUTOMATICS require you to know how to get them started with a bullet in the chamber. I also gave my child who is 11 education on them. I took the curiosity away. I said if you want to see them ask and I will show you them safely with open chamber and no ammo in them. I will show you to always have them pointed away from people etc. For people who try to hide the guns in their home or not properly educate their kids or have kids with mental illness etc, then you wouldnt want to have guns so readily available.

I hope I never have to exercise my states castle doctrine!!!It was the technology that got my attention.
I saw the CBS program and was surprised that three was so MUCH resistance to the 'smart gun' sales. It seems that traditions mechanical firearms have a special APPEAL to Americans. They are part of the heritage from American history.

As for the technology, there are a number of alternative ways to couple a gun to its owner. Some mechanical and do not require batteries. One technique is to have a special kind of safety that is understood by the owner, who have practiced with it. An individual without the training would fumble around trying to disable the safety. Of course, it would not be foolproof.
Anyway, I am GOING to quit here before I get a death threat.
