Solve : Replaced Power supply, now CPU fan sounds like 747 taking off?

Answer»

This is on a Compaq SR2180nx, the power supply went out so I took it to a repair shop to get it replaced. Ever since then the CPU fan RUNS at high speed all the time, from the time it BOOTS up to SHUT down. I took it back to the store and the guy says its normal for Compaqs to do that, that's why there is a extra large fan on the CPU. Funny, it never did it before. Is he right? It almost never ran at high speed before my power supply went out. The shop said they didn't remove or touch the fan at all.
Any suggestions? We replaced the PSU on a Dell and it did the same thing. It could just be the new PSU's fan is noiser than the old one.Its not the power supply fan that is loud its the original CPU fan with the heat sink attached.Quote

Odd. They must ave done something. The fan may have a temp sensor. Check to see if is connected. Or look in the BIOS and see if thee is an option to control the fan speed. And there is a change that the fan and heat sink are not well seat4ed. This will cause the CPU to heat up and the fan has to work harder because of the increase in thermal resistance. You need to check this out.Take a close look at the fan while the unit is off to be sure there is no part of the harness touching the fan blades. I have a few Compacs and have never hear that "Compacs do that".

That is an old fallback answer when the techs don't know the real reason or can't solve it.Do you supose that he removed the fan and heatsink so that the power supply could be replaced more easily and when he PUT it back he failed to recoat the heatsink and CPU with artic silver?Quote from: mkinttrim on September 18, 2009, 09:29:10 PM

That is what I was thinking.
Maybe he used toothpaste.Thermal Paste Instructions...Replaced the thermal paste to no avail. Guess I'll just have to live with it.
