Solve : Replacing hard drives??

Answer»

Recently my HP laptop stopped working, it will not start up. i've had such problems before but when i would take out the battery and put it back in it would work, now it does NOT. I have a gateway laptop whose internal hard drive has CRASHED. Can i take out my HP hard drive and put it in my gate way laptop. Would it work fine just as it was on my HP. If not is there anyway i can retrieve my data from my crashed HP computer , specially i need my itunes folder from program files so i can have all my playlist loaded into a new itunes for another computer . all help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance .Unfortunately you can't expect the OS from one laptop to work in another laptop. The hardware is different, so the drivers are different. Get one of these:

2.5" laptop to IDE converter...
This will enable you to hook up the laptop HDD's to any working desktop and retrieve...burn your data...

About 7 Bucks at any PC store...1. Computer Specs.
a. Make, model name/number of HP laptop
b. Product Number (should be info tag back, bottom, or under battery)
c. Operating system and service pack level of laptop

2. Restore/Recovery Resources. The "support" pages of the HP website should document what your restore/recovery options are for that HP laptop if it is a standard build/installation.
a. Hard drive may have "hidden" restore/recovery partition
b. Restore/Recovery CD/DVDs may be available from HP for "nominal" cost.
c. Do you have Microsoft "RETAIL" installation media for your operating system.

4. Data Recovery. Standard operating procedure for "data" recovery is to "slave" the data drive to a known working computer and attempt repair and/or recovery from its operating system. This operating system must support the file system type of the data drive.

If the data is important to you and the disk is readable, focus first on "data" recovery rather than repair. You should avoid any "writes" to the data drive. You just want to "read" it. You'll also need to determine where to place any recovered files (CD-R, DVD, USB thumb/flash, or hard drive media).

After you've secured the data you can't afford to lose, attempt to repair the file system and/or boot records.

The "slaved" drive may be attached to an internal INTERFACE of the working computer (best option) or PLACED in an external USB enclosure with the appropriate internal interface.

You'll need to determine the interface of the laptop hard drive (?) and the available internal interfaces of the working computer (IDE or SATA). Special interface cables with the appropriate adapters may be purchased for this operation.

5. Boot Live CD or USB Media. Alternatively, you can try to recover/repair the file system of the laptop by booting a compatible operating system from a Live CD or USB media. This operating system should permit access to your hard drive file system and include capability to copy files to other media. (Of course if laptop has hardware issues, you could do more damage to your files.)it just won't start up, it does not display anything. Before when it did that i took out the battery and put it back then it started. Now nothing at all. I just want my data from that hard drive.

ill add all the laptop specs later as i am not near it now.

I just want my data from that hard drive.
Then follow patio's advice... Save the "data" first, then come back and troubleshoot the laptop startup issue.
