I've never had a wireless network so it's all new to me. I have a Dell desktop (it's about 7 yrs old) but I'm going to buy a laptop (don't know which one yet) and I have a wireless printer so I'll need a router.
If you do not intend to move your printer around to different locations, you should be able connect it to the router via Ethernet cable. I BELIEVE most, if not all, wireless printers also have Ethernet ports which give the user the option to connect by cable instead of using a wireless CONNECTION. Connecting your printer to your router via cable is just going to be easier to set up. But, if you want to have some mobility with your printer, then you probably need to go the wireless way.

Connecting a networkable printer to a wireless router via Ethernet cable still allows wireless access to your printer from a wireless computer such as the laptop you're planning to get. The wireless signal between computer and printer just flows through the router, not directly between computer and printer. This works fine. Cannot speak with credibility re "all" wireless printers."I believe most, if not all, wireless printers also have Ethernet ports which give the user the option to connect by cable instead of using a wireless connection."
However in the case of our recently ACQUIRED Samsung it certainly does and was essential in the protocol of setting it up that initially it had to be connected to the router via an Ethernet cable before it could become wireless. truenorthAll wireless printers have USB, few have wired ethernet. After looking some printers on newegg.com, I see you are correct. Perhaps I got the impression ethernet connectivity was more COMMON because I have a Brother printer that I have connected to my router via ethernet cable. I also have the impression from briefly looking at some printers on newegg.com that Brother builds ethernet connectivity into more of their models than other manufacturers. Our Samsung CLP315W has both ,truenorth
